Katja Claesson Meet Results Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's swimming & diving team defeated the University of Rhode Island, 170-126, marking the second win over the Rams in program history, this afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center in the Seahawks' first meet since returning from winter break.
Wagner, which improves to 6-2 on the season, took home first-place honors in 10 out of the 16 events. Leading the way for the Seahawks was
Katja Claesson (Fullerton, CA/Troy), who swept her two individual events while setting a pool record in the 100 Breaststroke. The junior won the 100 Breaststroke in a record-breaking swim of 1:06.04, before claiming the 200 Breaststroke in a time of 2:23.81, which is just .04 shy of the pool record.
Senior
Amanda Lucia (Easthampton, MA/Easthampton) also delivered a top performance, sweeping all three of her individual events. Lucia won the first individual race of the meet, the 1,000 Freestyle, posting a time of 10:55.85, before going on to record first-place victories in the 200 Butterfly (2:09.82) and 100 Butterfly (59.48). Other first-place finishes for the Seahawks came from senior
Maggie Shaw (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly), in the 500 Free (5:15.71), and junior
Anu Nihipali (Honolulu, HI/Hawaii Preparatory Academy), in the 50 Free (24.60), while sophomore
Maddie McNichol (Downingtown, PA/Henderson) claimed first-place honors in the 200 IM (2:12.68).
In the 200 Fly and 500 Free events, Wagner took first, second and third place. Senior Michelle Detka (Buckeye, AZ/Verrado [University of Houston]) and sophomore
Erin Finn (Middletown, NJ/Middletown North) took second (2:17.87) and third (2:21.48) place, respectively, in the 200 Fly, finishing right behind Lucia. In the 500 Free, sophomores
Leahi Camacho (Kailua Kona, HI/Kealakene) and
Kirsty Hessing (Bloomington, IL/Normal Community) followed Shaw in placing second and third, respectively, with times of 5:21.00 and 5:24.40.
The women's 200 Medley Relay team of Nihipali, Claesson, Detka and freshman
Dorian McMenemy (Northborough, MA/Algonquin Regional), won in a time of 1:47.62, while the 400 Free Relay team of Nihipali, Detka, freshman Andrea Gustafsson (Malmo, Sweden/ProCivitas Privata Gymnasium) and senior
Corinne Rondina (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) took second place, touching the wall in a time of 3:21.56.
In diving action, senior
Erica Curry (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) won the 3-meter boards with a score of 218.53, more than 14 points ahead of URI's Kate Middleton, who took second in the event. Curry finished third overall on the 1-meter boards with 196.44 points. Fellow sophomore teammate
Sam Lavrich (Audubon, PA/Methacton) took second place on the 1-meter boards with 199.88 points and third on the 3-meter with 198.83 points.
The Seahawks have a short turnaround as they return to competition tomorrow, January 17, when they travel to Lewisburg, PA to compete against Bucknell. The meet is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
