Women’s Basketball Falls To CCSU 62-52 Despite Roma’s Career-High 20 Rebounds, Nwajei’s 24 Points

Box Score I Box Score (HTML)

Staten Island, NY – Sophomore forward Sofia Roma (Richmond Hill, NY/Nazareth Regional) set a career high with 20 rebounds and the nation's No. 3 scorer, junior guard Jasmine Nwajei (Rockaway Park, NY/Murry Bergtrum), matched her season average with 24 points, but Central Connecticut was able to post a 62-52 comeback win over Wagner today at the Spiro Sports Center.

In falling to the Blue Devils, Wagner drops to 2-14 on the season, 0-5 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while CCSU improves to 5-11 overall, 2-3 in league play.

Roma grabbed 13 of her 20 boards in the opening half while tying Nwajei for team-high honors in scoring with seven points as the Seahawks took a 23-21 lead into the intermission. Wagner led by a 37-34 count entering the fourth quarter before Central pulled away late.

The Seahawks maintained their three-point lead at 45-42 midway through the fourth quarter following a Nwajei layup. But Kiana Patterson answered with a three-point jumper at the 4:49 mark to tie the game at 45-45 and ignite a decisive 8-0 run that carried the Blue Devils to a 53-45 lead with 2:33 to go. The Seahawks drew to within seven on a free throw by junior guard Lyndsay Rowe (South River, NJ/St. John Vianney) before CCSU ran off six straight to push the lead to 57-46 with 1:31 left and held on from there.

Patterson paced the Blue Devils with 15 points while Emma Stroyan and TeJahne Malone added 10 points apiece.

Roma, whose previous career high was 18, also matched her career high with 11 points, thanks in large part to a 7-of-10 effort from the free throw line.  Her 11-point, 20-rebound performance was Roma's second double-double game of the season as she delivered an 11-point, 18-rebound effort in the Seahawks' 69-48 win over Lafayette back on December 9.

Central Connecticut outshot Wagner 38.9 percent to 34.5 percent while Wagner won the rebounding battle (43-35) and led in points in the paint (30-24) and second-chance points (14-10).

The Seahawks are next in action on Monday, January 18 when they host the LIU Brooklyn. Tip-off between the Seahawks and Blackbirds is set for 7:00 p.m.
