Staten Island, NY – Shanice Vaughn scored 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead a balanced LIU Brooklyn effort which offset a 32-point game by junior guard Jasmine Nwajei (Rockaway Park, NY/Murry Bergtraum), as the shorthanded Wagner women's basketball team dropped a 73-63 decision tonight at the Spiro Sports Center.

With just eight players available due to injury, the Seahawks scrapped their way to a 53-52 lead with less than a minute to play in the third quarter and trailed by just a 54-53 count entering the fourth. But the Blackbirds opened the final stanza on an 8-0 run in building a nine-point lead, at 62-53, en route to the 73-63 win.

With the victory, LIU Brooklyn improves to 5-12 on the season while evening its Northeast Conference record at 3-3 while the Seahawks are 2-15 overall, 0-6 in league.

For Nwajei, who entered the game ranked No. 4 nationally in scoring, the 32-point effort marked the sixth time this season, and 16th time in her career, that she has topped the 30-point mark. The 5-8 NYC guard, who upped her season average to 24.9 ppg., and her NEC average to a staggering 31.2 ppg., shot 11-of-21 from the floor to go with four assists, three rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot.

Sophomore guard Tanasia Russell (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) notched her third double-digit scoring game of the season, finishing with 11 for the Seahawks. Sophomore forward Sofia Roma (Richmond Hill, NY/Nazareth Regional) followed her 11-point, career-high 20-rebound effort vs. Central Connecticut on Saturday, with another productive performance in the low post, narrowly missing another double-double in finishing with nine points and 11 boards, along with five blocked shots.

Trailing 42-32 early in the third quarter, Wagner put together its best stretch of the game, embarking on an impressive 11-0 run over a span of 2:49, in taking a 43-42 lead on Wade's second three-pointer of the game with 4:45 left in the quarter. The Seahawks took their final lead of the game, at 53-52, on a Nwajei fast-break layup off a long outlet pass from
Jazmine Hamlet (New York, NY/Francis Lewis).

In addition to Vaughan's 29 points, the Blackbirds received double-digit outing from Paris Jones, who scored 14, and Jolanna Ford and Brianna Farris, who checked in with 11 apiece.

The game featured seven ties and eight lead changes before the Blackbirds pulled away late. LIU Brooklyn held a 45-33 edge in the rebounding department which led to a 32-20 advantage in points in the paint. The Blackbirds also led in points off turnovers (20-12), second-chance points (15-8) and fast-break points, while the thin Seahawk bench managed to outscore the LIU Brooklyn bench by a 14-13 count.

The teams each shot an identical 40.7 percent from the floor, with the Blackbird connecting on 24-of-59 and the Seahawks hitting on 22-of-54.

Junior starting guard Lyndsay Rowe (South River, NJ/St. John Vianney) sat out the game, joining senior Jordyn Peck (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights – 8.8 ppg.) and fifth-year senior guard Alexis Smith (Medford, NY/St. John the Baptist/Illinois – 7.2 ppg.), the team's second  and third-leading scorers  on the sidelines. Peck and Smith have been out for than a month each with injuries.

In Rowe's absence, senior guard Tessa Wade (Penn Valley, PA/ Lower Merion) got her first career start and hit for a career-high six points, on a pair of three-point jumpers, while grabbing two rebounds in a career-long 26-minute stint.

The Seahawks did welcome back freshman guard Julia McClure (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus), who had played just two minutes in the past 10 games due to injury. McClure hit a first-half three-pointer and finished with three in 13 minutes of play.

In a physical game, that saw the teams combine for 47 personal fouls, Wagner had three players foul out in Russell, Hamlet, and sophomore forward Samantha Sullivan (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan), while Ford and Styluz Sanders were disqualified for LIU Brooklyn.

The Seahawks are next in action on Saturday, January 23 when they host Sacred Heart at 1:00 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader with the Seahawks and Pioneer men's teams set to meet at 4:00 p.m.
