Hempstead, NY – The Wagner men's tennis team concluded play at the two-day Hofstra University Invitational and returns to Grymes Hill with some new hardware in the process.

"This tournament consisted of teams that we will play throughout the year and it was a great chance for the guys to see a lot of players that we will match-up with," commented head coach Jason Sinkoff "The guys played a lot of tennis and performed very well.  Every player won a match this weekend and I was happy with the results."

It was an all-Seahawk championship in the Doubles "C" Bracket as the tandem of sophomore Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) and freshman Ilya Kneppelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands/Scala College Secondary School) met sophomores Allen Wang (Clovis, CA/Buchanan) and Jakob Mostyn-Kolb (Melbourne, FL/Melbourne) in the championship round.  Boyd/Kneppelhout cruised to a 6-2 victory over Justin Park and Hari Rohan in the quarterfinal round while Wang/Mostyn-Kolb advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4 victory over Nick Borack and Cameron Posccillico.

In the semifinals, Boyd/Kneppelhout edged out Leonardo Pires and Yahn Gawrit of Hofstra, 6-4, while Wang/Mostyn-Kolb defeated Pedro Carvalho and William Bourne by a 6-4 margin.  In the end, it was Boyd/Kneppelhout coming out victorious as they edge their teammates, 6-3, to capture the Doubles C crown.

In the singles portion of the C bracket, Knepplehout was able to claim an 8-4 victory over Saint Peter's, Doug Nover while Boyd earned a bye in the Round of 16.  In the quarterfinals, Kneppelhout edged FDU's Pedro Carvalho, 8-2 while Boyd took an 8-5 singles win against Hofstra's Gustav Akesson. Only Kneppelhout was able to represent Wagner in the finals after he took the third set tiebreaker, 6-4; 4-6; 10-8 while Boyd was eliminated after dropping a 6-2; 6-3 decision to NYIT's Rares Ispas.  In the championship, Kneppelhout couldn't come back in the match and fell to Ispas, 7-5; 6-3.

At the Singles "B" bracket, newcomers Lucas Lu (Boca Raton, FL/Boca Prep International School) couldn't complete the comeback in the Round of 16 as he fell to NYIT's Rafal Charkiewicz, 9-7, while fellow newcomer Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot) was defeated by Fairleigh Dickinson's, Kiran Mani, 8-1.

The two rebounded nicely as both would head to the Consolation bracket.  There, Lu received a bye in the quarterfinals while Poland was able to defeat Fordham's Nick Borack, 8-2.  In the semifinals, Lu drew Hofstra's Yahn Gawrit and this time came away with a narrow 8-6 victory to advance to the championship round.  In the second semifinals, Poland also was victorious by the same 8-6 tally defeating Hofstra's Ricky Hendler in setting up the second all-Wagner final of the tournament. In the finale, Lu was able to come out with the win over fellow Florida native Poland, 6-2, giving the Seahawks their second title of the tournament.

In the D bracket, Mostyn-Kolb and Wang were able to advance all the way to the semifinals.  There, FDU's William Bourne ended Mostyn-Kolb chance at a single title after defeating him 6-4; 6-3 while Wang was able to cruise past Fordham's Harris Durkovic, 6-1; 6-1.  In the championship round which had a Northeast Conference (NEC) feel, Bourne came out with the win over Wang by the score of 6-3; 6-4.

In the Hofstra Men's Invitational bracket "A", sophomore Juan Alanis (Mexico City, Mexico/K12 International Academy) and newcomer Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa/Kersney College Secondary School) each advanced out of the Round of 16 with scores of 8-2 and 8-4, respectively. In the quarterfinals, the pair of Seahawks were outlasted by a pair from Stony Brook as Alanis fell to Tyler Hoffman, 8-3, and Sandy was ousted by eventual champion, Sam Taieb, 9-7, in a thrilling, back-and-forth match.

The Seahawks will compete in their second invitational of the fall season at the Quinnipiac University Invitational on October 2 through October 4.
