Marina Rull Valvieso (Barcelona, Spain/IES Antony Cumella [Tarleton State]) and junior transfer
Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High School [Southeastern Louisiana]) advanced to tomorrow's semifinal round.
In the tomorrow's final day of the two-day Hofstra Invitational, Sagwal will have a chance to compete in singles action as well, as she advanced to the "B" singles semi-finals and will square off against Nicole Szcezch of Colgate University while in the other semifinals match, Sarah Herndon of the host Hofstra will battle Saint Peter's Claudia Hellman.
Sagwal received a bye in the round of 16 and proceeded to defeat Colgate's Cheyenne Brown, 8-5, in the quarterfinals.
The Green & White were represented in the "A" tournament as well, as last season's All-Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie Team selection, sophomore
Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy), along with Rull Valvieso and newcomer
Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) were in the round of 16. Hodges fell 8-4 to Colgate's Katie Grant while Rull Valvieso dropped a 9-7 decision to Hofstra's Giulia Leone and Baynes was bested also by a Hofstra player, Carmen Pestano, 8-3.
In the Hofstra University Invitational Doubles Tournament, the duo of Rull Valvieso and Sagwal and Hodges/Baynes advanced to the semifinals. They will take on the Colgate quartet of Grant, Kaelin Brittin, Jennifer Ho and Lauren Hyland.
Hofstra University officials will flip the semifinal matchups so that the pairing of Ho/Hyland will switch with Hodges/Baynes so teammates won't meet until the finals.
The conclusion of the Hofstra Invitational will take place tomorrow at the campus of Hofstra University.
