ResultsLawrenceville, NJ – The Wagner men's tennis team earned a 7-0 shutout over Rider on Tuesday afternoon.
With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 2-0 on the season while the Broncs fall to 0-1 as it was their opening dual match of the fall season. In addition, the Green & White earned its second straight triumph over a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) school.
"I am really proud of our team's performance this afternoon," commented head coach
Jason Sinkoff. "We scheduled three matches this week and knew that it was going to be tough but we have put in the work in practice, focusing in on finishing off points at the net and everyone did that today."
Wagner won all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. The pairing of freshmen
Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot) and
Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa/Kersney College Secondary School) took a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, the Seahawks duo of sophomores
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) and
Jakob Mostyn-Kolb (Melbourne, FL/Melbourne) defeated the Broncs' Adam Levi and Matthew Begley, 6-2 to clinch the doubles point. In a back-and-forth affair at No. 1 doubles, sophomore
Juan Alanis (Mexico City, Mexico/K12 International Academy) and newcomer
Lucas Lu (Boca Raton, FL/Boca Prep International School) earned their first doubles win as a pairing after edging the tandem of Chris Popso and Diego Delgado, 7-5.
Momentum continued in Wagner's favor as Alanis defeated Popso, 6-1; 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match. Boyd recorded his 20th career singles victory and sixth out of the No. 5 position in straight sets over Begley at No. 5 singles. (6-0; 6-0).
The Seahawks claimed the match in No. 2 singles as Sandy notched Wagner's second straight set decision over Delgado. For Sandy, it is his second straight singles win and first out of the second flight position.
Lu and Poland each earned their first collegiate singles win out of No. 3 and No. 4, respectively while fellow classmate
Ilya Kneppelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands/Scala College Secondary School) improved to 2-0 with his victory at No. 6 singles.
Wagner will host Northeast Conference (NEC) rival, St. Francis Brooklyn on Friday, September 18 in the first conference match of the fall. The match is slated to begin at 3:00 pm from the Wagner Tennis Courts.
