HEREGegan Earns NEC Midfielder of the Year & First-Team Honors, Rey Tabbed Second Team Smithfield, RI – Second-seeded Wagner will face defending champion and top-seed Bryant in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship game today at 1:00 p.m. with the winner gaining automatic entry into the
2015 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship.
Championship Sunday will have a familiar ring to it as the matchup between the 9-9 Seahawks, on the heels of a
dominant 15-6 win over Mount St. Mary's in Friday night's semifinal contest, and the 13-4 Bulldogs will be a rematch of last year's final, which Bryant won by a 14-6 count.
Senior midfielder
Jessica Mills (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) recorded a game-high six points on three goals and three assists, while junior midfielder
Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) and sophomore attack
Olivia Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) contributed hat tricks as well in the impressive semifinal win over the Mountaineers.
Host Bryant, whose 13-4 mark includes an 8-4 win over Wagner (4/24), rolled to an 18-10 victory over Robert Morris in the first semifinal game on Friday, sparked by a six-goal effort from NEC Offensive Player of the Year Lauren Descalzo.
The Bulldogs are the only team that Wagner has not beaten in the two-year
Liz Frisoli era, as the fiery field general boasts a record of 12-1 against all other NEC foes. Overall, Bryant has won the last four meetings over Wagner (three with Frisoli at the helm), and today's game marks the ninth all-time meeting between the schools with the Bulldogs holding a 5-3 lead in the all-time series.
