ResultsSmithfield, RI- The Wagner men's tennis team picked up its 12
th win of the season as the Seahawks earned a key 4-3 Northeast Conference (NEC) road win at Bryant University on Friday.
"I'm really happy for our team," said head coach
Danny Kreyman. "We finally had a breakthrough win and it came at a pivotal point with the conference hampionships right around the corner."
The Seahawks were down 3-0 in the match after the Bulldogs took #1, #2, and #5. Freshman
Juan Alanis (Mexico City, Mexico/K12 International Academy) edged his opponent, Luke Lorenz, 0-6; 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) in #3 singles to put Wagner on the board. Classmate
Allen Wang (Clovis, CA/Buchanan) was victorious at #4 against Ernesto Arguello, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6). With the win, Wang notched his ninth victory of the season.
At #6 singles, freshman
Jakob Mostyn-Kolb (Melbourne, FL/Melbourne) bested Abdullah Abdulmohsen, 5-7; 7-5; 6-2 that split the singles matches at 3-3.
Bryant's pairing of Matt Kuhar and Joshua Kliger was able to get past the tandem of
Michal Rolski (Kielczow, Poland/Oak Meadow [VT]) and Alanis, 8-5. The Seahawks' pair of
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) and
Ryan Khan (Weston, FL/University School) defeated Zachary Morris and Arguello, 8-7, and 7-2 in the tie-breaker.
Wagner clinched the match as Wang and Mostyn-Kolb picked up an 8-7 (8-6) win in #3 doubles.
"I'm extremely proud of Allen and Jake," said Kreyman. "They played a phenomenal doubles to push us to victory. It was such a thrilling and exciting match."
Wagner will close out the regular season on April 13 as they welcome Rider University. The match is scheduled to start at 3:00 pm.
