Lexington, VA - The #14 Wagner (18-7) women's water polo team defeated Iona (17-10) 14-8 while later besting St. Francis Brooklyn (5-16) 25-6 to improve its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference MAAC record to 5-1.
Iona (Score Sheet)The Seahawks jumped out early to 2-0 lead after scores from
Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia/ Mountain Creek) and
Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA/ San Ramon Valley) four minutes into the contest. Iona responded with two goals of its own to bring the game to a 2-2 draw.
Michelle Greenough (Davis, CA/ Davis) found the back of the net with 2:14 remaining off an assist from
Kimberly Watson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec/ John Rennie) which was followed by a five meter penalty shot from Lundgren that ripped past the goalie.
Iona edge a 3-2 scoring advantage in the second period to bring the score to 6-5 at the half. Lundgren was awarded and delivered once again on a five meter penalty shot early in the quarter as Rodriguez netted a man-up goal with only 22 seconds left in the stanza.
Wagner took control of the game in the second half as they have so many times this season, outscoring the Gaels 8-3. The Green & White registered four goals in each quarter as Lundgren and Watson led the way with two second half scores each. Rodriguez, senior co-captain

Elise Begg (Newbury Park, CA/ Newbury) all rattled the cage for a goal apiece.
St. Francis Brooklyn (Score Sheet)Wagner displayed an impressive offensive arsenal as it posted season-high 25 goals in its victory over St. Francis Brooklyn this afternoon.
The Seahawks scored often and early as they netted eleven first quarter goals highlighted by a four goal output from Lundgren. Watson and Doerfler found the back of the net on two occasions in the opening stanza. Sophomore
Gabryel Oloapu (Auckland, New Zealand/ Diocesan), Rodriguez and Greenough all registered a score as well in the period to bring the Green & White's lead to 11-2.
Wagner's offensive output in second quarter was clicking once again tallying seven goals. Doerfler took over in the period scoring three goals and flashing a versatile skill set. Oloapu tallied two more in the period to give her a hat trick in the game.
Amanda Sutherland (Denton, TX/ Denton Ryan) entered the scoring column with two strikes in the quarter as Wagner led 18-2 at the half.
The Seahawks scoring was balanced in the third with Sutherland, Oloapu, Chandler, and Watson each tallied a single goal. Wagner added three more goals in the fourth and final period as Oloapu added her fifth score of the game with Chandler and Doerfler each tallying once again to bring the final tally to 25-6 in the Green & White's favor.
Wagner is back in action Saturday, April 4 against Villanova at 9:00 a.m. and Siena at 4:00 p.m.
