Seahawks Fall To Fresno State In West Coast Trip Finale

Fresno, CA – The Wagner College Seahawks concluded their West Coast trip on Wednesday evening with a 10-1 setback against the Fresno State Bulldogs in non-conference action at Beiden Field.

With the loss, the Green & White fall  to 0-7-1 on the 2015 campaign while the Bulldogs even their overall record to 9-9.

Sophomore right-hander Eric McGough (Media, PA/Archbishop John Carroll) gained the start and suffered his first loss of the season (0-1), pitching two innings, allowing two hits, two runs (both earned) while walking two Bulldogs. His counterpart, Anthony Arias threw 5.2 innings of three-hit ball allowing just one run while fanning seven Seahawks.

Fresno State took a 2-0 second inning lead as Korby Batesole doubled to right field, scoring Aaron Arruda and Ryan Dobson, who had kicked things off with a single and a walk, respectively. The Bulldogs tacked on two more runs the third inning to take a 4-0 leadm as Manny Argomaniz sent a deep fly that sailed over the left field wall, scoring Brody Russell, who had reached via a five-pitch free pass.

Wagner scored its lone run of the contest in the top of the fourth when senior catcher Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township), who was named to the 2015 Johnny Bench Award Watch List earlier in the day,  smashed a towering home run to left center that hit the top of the scoreboard at the ballpark. For Dini, it is his first homerun of the season while the New Jersey native started in his 171st consecutive game.

After both teams failed to score in the next three innings, Fresno State erupted for five runs in the seventh. Jake Stone doubled to left center after senior righty relief pitcher Steven Bloodworth (Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon) was able to get Austin Guibor to fly out for the first out of the inning. Torin Goldstein then came on as a pinch-hitter and delivered an RBI single to left field.

Left-handed sophomore Nick DiLeo (Brooklyn, NY/Xavier (St. John's) came on in relief of Bloodworth with the bases loaded. Nick Warren, pinch-hitting for Kenny Corey, proceeded to clear the bases with a three-run RBI triple before scoring himself on a wild pitch to give the Bulldogs a 9-1 advantage. Fresno State added its final run in the bottom of the eighth as Arruda doubled to right field, plating Christian Parra, who had singled.

The Seahawks return to the East Coast as they gear up to tangle with the Saint Joseph's University Hawks on Friday, March 13.
