Water Polo Upsets 10th Ranked Long Beach State 5-3

Box Score

Lewisburg, PA – The Wagner women's water polo team upset 10th ranked Long Beach State in a defensive struggle by a count of 5-3 on the second day of the Bison Invitational, hosted by Bucknell University. The Green & White improve their overall record to 5-1 with the victory. In the process, MAAC Offensive Player of the Week Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia/Mountain Creek) became Wagner's all-time career leader in steals.

The game was tight from the opening minute to the sound of the horn as neither team ever led by more than two goals. The defensive effort from the Seahawks staggered the offensive approach of Long Beach State all afternoon.

Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Riddle (Edmonton, Alberta/ Dr. E.P. Scarlett) was locked in as she saved 11 shot attempts, a season high, while holding the opponent to a remarkable three goals.

Long Beach State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after a goal from junior center Kayla Robert. The Seahawks responded nicely with two unanswered goals, one from reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Year Jess Lundgren and the other from lefty specialist Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA/ San Ramon Valley) before a second strike from Long Beach State's Robert tied the game at two after the first quarter.

The second quarter was played tight to the vest, as neither team had many opportunities to score before freshman Elise Begg (Newbury Park, CA/ Newbury Park) rattled the cage for a score with 1:48 remaining in the half as the score and momentum shifted in the Seahawks favor.

The defensive themed continued in the third period as the Green & White tallied the lone goal in the quarter off a strike from Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD/ Broadneck) as the score read 4-2 at the end of three.

Doerfler tallied again early in the fourth to put the Seahawks up 5-2 with exactly 6:00 minutes remaining in the game.  The defense and goalie Riddle would hold off the pressured play of Long Beach State, allowing only a single goal in the quarter to seal the 5-3 victory over the 10th ranked team in the nation.

This marks the first time in head coach Chris Radmonovich's tenure that the Green & White have defeated a top ten opponent.
