Women’s Lacrosse Falls To American 16-12 In Home Opener

Staten Island, NY Junior midfielder Shea Gegan (Belmar, NJ/Manasquan, NJ) and junior attacker Stephanie Peterson (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) scored three goals apiece but American broke a 10-10 tie by scoring four of the game's final six goals in earning a 16-12 win over Wagner in women's lacrosse action at Hameline Field today.
 
Gegan, the 2014 NEC Defensive Player of the Year, recorded a team-high four points as she also added an assist to her hat trick. Junior midfielder Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) found the net twice for Wagner while freshman midfielder Tori Ross (Sayville, NY/Sayville) and junior attackers Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview), and Taylor Pastore (Baldwinsville, NY / C.W. Baker) tallied one goal each.
 
The Seahawks had a 23-15 edge in ground balls but American out-shot Wagner 31-25, including a 6-of-11 effort on free-position attempts.
 
Eight different Eagles notched goals, led by Madison Hoon who scored a career-high five goals, while Jessica Wojciechowski added four goals. In addition, junior Olivia Mangan tallied two goals and a game-high four assists.
 
The game was close throughout a first half that featured four ties and three lead changes.Wagner grabbed a 9-8 lead on an unassisted goal by Gegan with 1:42 left in the opening half before Madison made it a 9-9 game at halftime with a goal at the 18-second mark of the half.
 
The Seahawks regained the advantage in the first minute of the second half on a Pastore score off a Gegan feed but the Eagles then sank three consecutive free-position goals to go ahead 12-10 en route to the win.
 
Wagner falls to 0-2 on the season while the Eagles are 1-0. The Seahawks are next in action on Saturday, February 21 when they travel to Riverdale, NY to meet the Manhattan College Jaspers with first draw set for 1:00 p.m.
