Queens, NY- The 95th season of Wagner men's basketball begins tonight when the Seahawks make the short trip to Queens to battle St. John's, of the Big East Conference, at Carnesecca Arena.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m and the game will be televised live on Fox Sports 1 with Kenny Albert and Bill Raftery delivering the call from courtside.

ABOUT THE SEAHAWKS
  • Redshirt senior forward Mike Aaman (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan [Rhode Island]), an active 6-8, 210-pound inside force, returns for the 2015-16 campaign as the team's leading scorer (10.4 ppg) and rebounder (9.3 rpg) despite appearing in just 17 games last season.
  • Redshirt senior guard Dwaun Anderson (Suttons Bay, MI/Suttons Bay [Michigan State]) returns to the team after missing all but one game last season.  The high-flying 6-4 Anderson missed the first part of the 2014-15 due to a foot injury. He made his season debut back on January 5, at home against fellow conference rival, Mount St. Mary's, only playing six minutes and grabbing three rebounds, before reaggravating the injury which sidelined him for the rest of the season.
  • Fellow upperclassman Greg Senat (Elmont, NY/Elmont [Marianpolis Prep]) returns for his junior season. A year ago, the sturdy 6-8, 240-pound Senat, appeared in 29 games while earning the start in 17 contests.
  • Sophomore Corey Henson (Upper Marlboro, MD/DeMatha Catholic), an athletic 6-3 guard, enters this season as the team's second-leading scorer after averaging 9.1 ppg in 2014-15, and will be a focal point of Mason's offense.
  • Sophomore guard JoJo Cooper (Wilmington, DE/Concord) is also expected to be in the mix at the point guard position for the Seahawks. In his inaugural season, the 6-0 Cooper averaged 4.0 helpers last year, ranking fifth in the conference.
  • Aaren Edmead (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park), another sophomore guard, who checks in at 5-10, converted on 36.4 percent from three-point range last season, which ranked 12th in the Northeast Conference (NEC).
  • Romone Saunders (Temple Hills, MD/Potomac [Mt.Zion Prep]), a versatile 6-3 wing, appeared in 27 of 30 games last year, averaged 7.9 ppg (10th among all-NEC freshmen) and 4.1 rpg (3rd most among NEC newcomers) will be a viable option for Wagner this season as he can play both the 2 and 3 positions.
  • Japhet Kadji (Douala, Cameroon/Gulliver Prep [IMG Academy]) the younger brother of former Florida and Miami basketball player, Kenny, has worked hard during the offseason. The bouncy 6-7 Kadji, can score in the paint while as well as step out in the perimeter, as his 41.2 percent accuracy from beyond the arc last season (7-of-17) attests.

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY
  • Fourth-year head coach Bashir Mason welcomes five new Seahawks into the fold, with four of them eligible to play this season.
  • Henry Brooks (New Orleans, LA/Miller Grove [Pennsylvania]), an inside presence at 6-8, 215, joins the Wagner College basketball program as a graduate student transfer with one year of eligibility remaining. Brooks will be eligible right away for the 2015-16 season after spending his three previous seasons as the University of Pennsylvania. During his sophomore campaign, Brooks made 28 starts in 31 games, averaging 6.5 ppg and 3.4 rpg while finishing third on the squad in steals (24) and blocked shots (11).
  • Michael Carey (Nassau, Bahamas/Lamar Consoldiated [San Jacinto]) an athletic and rugged 6-5, 190-pound guard, averaged 10.9 points and 5.8 rebounds last season at San Jacinto College. After originally committed to Texas Tech, Carey led San Jacinto to a 28-6 record while leading the squad to its first National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Men's Basketball Championship appearance in ten years.
  • Devin Liggeons (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep Charter) a 6-3 freshman guard, arrives on Grymes Hill with the ability to play the two or three position. In his senior year, Liggeons helped the Panthers to a 22-10 record as he tallied 13.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg, and 4.0 assists per game as Imhotep reached the PIAA Class AAA quarterfinals.
  • Marquis Salmon (Lancaster, CA/Village Christian [East Los Angeles Community College]), at 6-8, 210, spent the 2014-15 season at East Los Angeles Community College, where he averaged 11.6 points per game, 6.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.1 steals and nearly a block per game.  He helped guide the team to a 22-11 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA).

WAIT 'TIL NEXT YEAR
  • AJ Sumbry (East Windsor, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep [Quinnipiac]), will sit out the 2015-16 season due to NCAA transfer rules. He comes to Wagner by way of Quinnipiac University.  At Quinnipiac, the 6-8, 227-pound Garden State native appeared in 29 games for the Bobcats, scoring a career-high 10points against Hartford.

SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S
  • A new era begins for the St. John's University Red Storm men's basketball program as Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer, Chris Mullin, became the 20th head coach in the school's history on March 30, 2015.
  • Mullin, who is the first head coach in St. John's history to have played under fellow Hall of Famer, Lou Carnesecca, is one of seven Hall of Famers actively coaching at the Division I level, joining Jim Boeheim (Syracuse), John Calipari (Kentucky), Larry Brown (SMU), Mike Krzyzewski (Duke), Rick Pitino (Louisville) and Roy Williams (UNC).
  • St. John's finished the 2014-15 season with a 21-12 record while reaching the NCAA First Round.
  • The Red Storm lost ten letterwinners from last season's squad, including D'Angelo Harrison, a two-time First Team All-Big East selection, Sir'Dominic Pointer, the 2014-15 Big East Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Big East Most Improved Player and Second Team Choice, along with Phil Greene IV, Rysheed Jordan and Chris Obekpa.
  • St. John's returns three players from last season's team, which includes sophomore forward Amar Alibegovic. A 6-9 forward, Alibegovic appeared in 24 games last season, averaging 1.5 points in 8.4 minutes.  Joining Alibegovic is redshirt junior forward Christian Jones, who saw action in 20 games last season and senior guard Felix Balamou, who played in 22 games while garnering the starting nod three times. In all, Coach Mullin welcomes ten new players to Queens this season, with four of those players coming from overseas.

SERIES HISTORY
  • Tonight's matchup between the Seahawks and the Red Storm marks the 19th all-time meeting between the two schools as Wagner trails in the head-to-head series, 16-2
  • The Green & White will look to end a nine-game losing skid to the Red Storm, last facing the Johnnies on Nov. 15, 2013, a 73-57 setback.
  • The last time Wagner was victorious against St. John's was back on February 2, 1956, as the Green & White came away with a 92-90 victory.

WAGNER ALL-TIME VS. BIG EAST OPPONENTS
  • All-time, Wagner is 7-49 against current members of the Big East Conference.
  • The Seahawks have seen St. John's and Seton Hall the most out of the Big East, posting a 7-38 all-time mark.
  • There are only three schools within the conference that the Green & White haven't faced off against: Butler, Creighton and Xavier.

SUCCESSFUL STARTS
  • The Wagner men's basketball history can be traced way back to the 1920-21 season when the Seahawks were led by Erastus Larue Ely. During that season, the team went a combined 1-4 on the season.
  • Since their inaugural season of 1920-21, the Wagner men's basketball program is 53-42 all-time in season openers.
  • Since being elevated to Division I back for the 1976-77 under then head coach and athletic director, P.J. Carlesimo, the Green & White are 26-18 in lid-lifters.
