Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's soccer team will host its annual breast cancer awareness game tomorrow night when the Seahawks take on LIU Brooklyn in a 7:00 p.m. Northeast Conference (NEC) matchup at Hameline Field.
The team will be wearing pink jerseys in support of the month of October which has been deemed
Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Green & White will also look to raise money towards the
American Cancer Society and are accepting donations from fans with a donation jar at the main gate of Hameline field.
The Seahawks will also welcome a breast cancer survivor as an honorary team captain who will be participating in the coin toss.
Scouting the Seahawks Wagner (1-9-1, 0-1-0 NEC) is coming off of a tough conference opening loss on the road to Bryant. The Seahawks struck first as junior midfielder
Megan Fritz (Cape Coral, FL/Mariner) laced her fourth goal of the season off of an assist by junior forward
Diana Saber (Syosett, NY/Syosett). Saber dribbled the ball up the left side, put a pass in the box to Fritz who netted one high over Bryant goalkeeper Kaylan Conrad's head to take 1-0 lead just two minutes into the contest.
Despite the two goals by Bryant and taking the loss, Wagner created multiple opportunities and controlled much of the game, while outshooting the Bulldogs 21-9 in 90 minutes.
Fritz leads the Seahawks with nine points, four goals and one assist on the season. Freshman defender
Peyton Beck (St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves) follows Fritz with four points and two goals in her first collegiate season.
Scouting LIU Brooklyn LIU Brooklyn (3-9-0, 0-2-0 NEC) arrives to Grymes Hill looking for a win after dropping its first two NEC matchup's to Saint Francis U. and Central Connecticut. Last Friday, the Blackbirds were defeated by the Red Flash 2-1 in overtime. LIU Brooklyn took the lead in the 18th minute off of a header by junior Madison Gomez from a free kick by senior Lucy Gunton-Jones. The Red Flash responded in the 35th minute to tie it up and then took the game winner in the 96th minute off of a rebound in the box.
On Sunday, LIU Brooklyn was able to put up one goal from redshirt sophomore Allegra Ondrejka, her fourth marker of the season, assisted by Gunton-Jones before the Blue Devils rolled past the Blackbirds 5-1.
Ondrejka leads the Blackbirds with four goals, while Gomez and Marian Awad each have three goals a piece on the season.
LIU Brooklyn has netted four goals while allowing eight goals in the past three games.
Wagner vs. LIU BrooklynTomorrow's contest will be the 19th meeting between the two squads. The series record is currently in favor of the Blackbirds 14-4, however Wagner enters Fridays contest with the upper hand, winning the past two matches, each by scores of 1-0. Eight out of the past nine meetings between the two squads were in shutout form.
Coming UpThe Seahawks will be playing the makeup game against Robert Morris that was postponed last Friday due to inclement weather and unplayable field conditions. The Colonials head back to Staten Island for a 2:00 p.m. NEC matchup on Friday, October 16, before hitting the road to Fairleigh Dickinson for a 12:00 p.m. game on Sunday, October 18.
