ResultsStaten Island, NY – The Wagner men's tennis team concluded its fall season with its fourth shutout victory of the year, blanking The College of Holy Cross Crusaders, 7-0, on Saturday morning from the Wagner Tennis Courts.
The Seahawks, under first-year head coach
Jason Sinkoff, raised its overall record to 5-1 which includes a 1-0 mark in Northeast Conference (NEC) action while the Crusaders drop to 2-2 on the year.
"Coming into today's match we wanted to put everything together that we have worked on this first semester," commented Sinkoff. "It was the final match of the fall season and one of our best all-around performances."
Wagner took the matches' first point after sweeping all three doubles points. The pairing of freshman
Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/ Bishop Verot) and reigning Corvais ECAC Men's Tennis Rookie of the Month,
Ilya Kneppelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands/Scala College Secondary School) earned their first victory of the season as a tandem with 6-2 victory out of No. 1 doubles against Rich DeGregoris and Peter Campito.
The sophomore combination of
Allen Wang (Clovis, CA/Buchanan) and
Jakob Mostyn-Kolb (Melbourne, FL/Melbourne) edged Henry Harrs and Michael Varda, 6-4, in No. 2 doubles action.
"I thought Jakob and Allen handled the pressure points very well in their doubles match," critiqued Sinkoff. "They closed on the net well together and set each other up for some pivotal putaway volleys."
Wagner concluded the three-match sweep as reigning Corvias ECAC Player of the Month, sophomore
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) and fellow classmate,
Jeremy Nuss (Portland, OR/Lincoln) teamed up for the first time this season as defeated the team of Jimmy Ye and Charlie Volkwein, 6-2 in No. 3 doubles.
Boyd was the first Seahawk to first his singles match as he cruised to a 6-1; 6-0 victory over Ye in No. 3 singles action. For the second-year Seahawk, he earned career singles victory No. 25 in the process as he now holds a 25-10 overall record to go along with a 19-7 mark in dual matches while improving his 2015-16 overall record to 7-1 (6-0 in dual matches).
Kneppelhout earned his team-leading eighth victory of the season as the first-year Seahawk posted a 6-1; 6-1 triumph over DeGregoris in No. 4 singles.
The Green & White clinched their fifth win of the season in No. 2 singles as Poland was able to edge Varda, 6-2; 6-4 for his sixth career victory (6-4 overall, 4-2 in dual action).
"Eric stepped up for us in the singles play today," said Sinkoff. "He had a tough opponent and played very well. He has a tremendous upside and with his strong work ethic, he should continue to build momentum in the spring."
