Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's swimming & diving team opened the 2015-16 Northeast Conference (NEC) slate on a strong note, posting a 177.5–120.5 win over Bryant Saturday afternoon.
En route to earning the victory, the Seahawks won all 14 swimming events, a first for the Wagner program for a dual meet, while setting a new pool record in the 200-yard Medley Relay.
The stellar group of junior's
Anu Nihipali (Honolulu, HI/Hawaii Preparatory Academy),
Katja Claesson (Fullerton, CA/Troy), senior
Amanda Lucia (Easthampton, MA/East Hampton) and freshman
Dorian McMenemy (Northborough, MA/Algonquin Regional) set the tone in the first event of the day, the 200-yard Medley relay, when they set a new pool record with a time of 1:46.99.
McMenemy notched her first two collegiate victories in both of her individual events. The freshman touched the wall in a 24.39 in the 50-yard freestyle followed by a 53.11 finish in the 100-yard free.
Nihipali, Lucia and Claesson each won both of their individual events as well. Nihipali took the reins in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events, posting times of 56.85 and 2:07.49, respectively, while Lucia covered the butterfly events. The senior captain pulled away in the 200-yard butterfly, touching the wall in a time of 2:08.44 and then posted a 59.15 in the 100-yard fly. Claesson secured the breaststroke aspect, winning both the 100-yard breast (1:06.85) and the 200-yard breast (2:28.01).
Senior
Maggie Shaw (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly) was also dominant today, winning both of her individual distance events. No one could catch Shaw after she pulled away midway through the 1,000-yard free. She clocked in with a time of 10:43.72 and then won the 500-yard free with a 5:16.09.
Sophomore
Maddie McNichol (Downingtown, PA/Henderson) took home first place in the 200-yard free, clocking in with a 1:57.21, out touching Bryant opponent Valeria Watson.
Senior's
Michele Detka (Buckeye, AZ/Verrado) and
Erin Malone (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) were key contributors to the Seahawks group effort in the 100-yard fly. Wagner was able to sweep the event as Lucia finished first, Detka in second (59.63) and Malone in third (1:00.18), which would be the first sweep of 2015-16 season.
Sophomore
Leahi Camacho (Kailua Kona, HI/Kealakene) also provided strong depth for the Seahawks. Camacho finished behind teammate Shaw in the 1000-yard free, taking second place with a time of 10:54.82. She then finished third overall in the 200-yard fly, touching the wall in a time of 2:15.71.
