Morgan StonerRESULTS Staten Island, NY – Three Wagner swimmers and one diver closed out their respective collegiate home careers on Saturday, helping to lead the Seahawks to a 139-77 Northeast Conference (NEC) victory over St. Francis Brooklyn on Senior Day this afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center.
The Green & White posted the best mark in 10 of the 14 events, as seniors
Morgan Stoner (Greensburg, PA/ Hempfield Area Senior) and
Samantha Sides (Cherry Hill, NJ/ Cherry Hill East) each won individual events. Also winning were juniors
Amanda Lucia (Easthampton, MA/Easthampton),
Erin Malone (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) and Michelle Detka (Buckeye, AZ / Verrado), sophomores
Katja Claesson (Fullerton, CA/ Troy) and
Anu Nihipali (Honolulu, HI/Hawaii Preparatory Academy), and freshmen
Leahi Camacho (Kailua Kona, HI/ Kealakene) and
Kristine Sullivan (Overland Park, KS/ Notre Dame de Sion).
The meet began with the 200-yard Medley Relay, as Malone, Stoner, Nihipali, and
Maddie McNichol (Downington, PA/ Henderson) led the way for the Seahawks, taking first place with a time of 1:54.59. The Wagner 'B' relay finished second, comprised of Megan Mendez (Export, PA/ PA Cyber), Sides, Detka and
Corinne Rondina (Staten Island, NY/ Notre Dame Academy). In the 1000-yard freestyle, Camacho out-touched her Terrier opponent by .24 of a second (10:53.75).
Wagner swept the 200-yard free, taking first, second and third place honors with impressive swims by Lucia (1:59.94),
Maggie Shaw (Chantilly, VA/ Chantilly) (2:01.75), and
Maggie Slocomb (Landenburg, PA/ St. Marks) (2:01.79), respectively. This became a common theme as the Seahawks then swept the 50-yard free. Nihipali touched the wall first with a time of 24.84, followed by Sides (25.47) with freshman
Erin Finn (Middletown, NJ/ Middletown North) placing third (27.04). All six girls combined for a total of 32 points in the two events for Wagner.
Malone and Sullivan each earned nine points for the Seahawks on the afternoon with their individual wins with Malone placing first in the100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.95, while Sullivan's time of 56.62 earned her first-place honors in the 100-yard backstroke, while Rondina was the second swimmer to touch the wall in the 100-yard back with a time of 57.68.
The Wagner swimming & diving team will be back in the pool for the last dual meet of the season against NEC rival, Central Connecticut in New Britain, CT on Saturday, February 7 for a 2:00 p.m. start.
