Staten Island, NY – The Wagner Water Polo team travels to Bloomington, IN this weekend to compete in the Indiana Invitational, marking the first competition of the 2015 season for the defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Champions.
The Green & White will face-off with MAAC rival Marist on Saturday, January 24 at 3:00 PM, in a rematch of last season's
MAAC title game which saw the Seahawks claim victory and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. It was Marist however, who was tabbed as the 2015 MAAC preseason favorites with the Seahawks slotted second.
Marist returns 2014 All-MAAC First Team goalie Skylar Henry, who was voted by the coaches as the conference Preseason Goalie of the Year after allowing only 8.68 goals per game a season ago.
The Seahawks will face another familiar foe on Sunday at 9:00 AM as they go head to head with Indiana, who knocked Wagner out of the
NCAA Tournament Play-In game a year ago by a count of 11-6. The Hoosiers begin the 2015 season as the Collegiate Water Polo Association's (CWPA) 9th ranked team in the nation.
The Green & White return their top five scorers from a season ago including 2015 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year
Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia / Mountain Creek) who tallied 181 total points.
Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA / San Ramon Valley) collected 170,
Jessica Burdge (Stockton, CA / St. Mary's) ended with 150,
Rachel Burns (Auckland, New Zealand / Diocesan) netted 106 and
Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD / Broadneck) scored 67 points to round out the top returning playmakers.
Standout sophomore goalie
Emily Riddle (Edmonton, Alberta / Dr. E.P. Scarlett) also returns after an impressive season which earned her All-MAAC Second-Team honors.
