Wagner Falls to Indiana 11-6 In NCAA Play-In Game

Box Score

Bloomington, IN
- The Wagner Water Polo season came to an end today, as the Seahawks fell to #12 Indiana 11-6 in the NCAA Tournament Play-In game. Wagner finishes the season at 25-12, after an impressive stretch in which the Green and White won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship.

Indiana began the scoring, scoring the first goal of the game a mere 31 seconds into the contest. Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD / Broadneck) had the answer for Indiana as Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA / San Ramon Valley) found her sophomore classmate for the score.

Wagner went down 2-1 after another Indiana score near the end of the quarter, and the Seahawks were down 3-1 after a Hoosier goal at the beginning of the second. Co-Captain Rachel Burns (Auckland, New Zealand / Diocesan) found the other Co-Captain Stacy McGregor (Sinking Spring, PA / Wilson) for a goal to make it 3-2 with 4:49 left until the half.

The Seahawks were able to score two more goals in the second quarter from Burns and Michelle Greenough (Davis, CA / Davis), but Indiana scored three more goals, taking a 6-4 lead into the half. The Hoosiers came out hot in the second half, netting a goal at the 7:29 mark in the third, and scoring again off of a penalty shot with 6:22 remaining in the quarter.

Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia / Mountain Creek) and Burns were able to each net goals at the end of the third, but that would be all the scoring the Seahawks would have on the game. Indiana shut out Wagner in the fourth quarter, as the home team scored twice, making the final 11-6.

Freshman Emily Riddle (Edmonton, Alberta / Dr. E.P. Scarlett) saved ten shots in the net on the game, while also grabbing a steal, and finding Burns on an assist in the second quarter. For the game, Wagner tallied six goals off of six different players.

From here, Indiana will advance to play #1 Stanford in the NCAA Championships. The 25 wins added to the 26 victories last year are the most over a two-year stretch in Wagner Water Polo history.
