Poughkeepsie, NY – Wagner started the day with a 21-8 win over St. Francis Brooklyn, before falling to Marist 13-12 in the second weekend of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play in Poughkeepsie, NY.
In the first game, Wagner scored nine first quarter goals on the way to a 21-8 rout of St. Francis Brooklyn. Eleven different players found the back of the net for the Seahawks, highlighted by four goals from sophomore
Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA / San Ramon Valley) and three each from juniors
Michelle Greenough (Davis, CA / Davis) and
Jessica Burdge (Stockton, CA / St. Mary's).
Also scoring multiple goals for the Green and White was senior
Maura McGinley (King of Prussia, PA / Upper Merion), junior
Rachel Burns (Auckland, New Zealand / Diocesan), and freshman
Gabryel Oloapu (Auckland, New Zealand / Diocesan) with two each.
In the second contest, Wagner fell 13-12 to Marist in a back-and-forth affair. The teams were tied after the first quarter, 3-3, when Lundgren, Burdge, and Rodriguez were able to score for Wagner.
After trailing 7-6 at halftime, the Seahawks took back the lead at 8-7 on a goal by
Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD / Broadneck) at the 5:43 mark in the third quarter. Marist was able to make a run later on in the quarter, and led 11-9 at the end of the period.
Burdge scored two of her six goals in the fourth quarter and
Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia / Mountain Creek) scored one as Wagner tied the score 12-12 in the fourth quarter. A late goal by the Red Foxes was the difference, as the Seahawks fell, 13-12.
With the split, Wagner is now 15-11 on the season and 3-1 in MAAC play. The Seahawks return to action next weekend, with four games in Loundonville, NY. On Saturday, April 5, Wagner will battle Villanova and VMI, before taking on St. Francis Brooklyn and Iona the following day.
