BOX SCORE
Staten Island, NY – Sophomore attack
Shea Gegan (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan HS) and junior midfielder
Jessica Mills (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township, NJ) scored two goals apiece to lead the Wagner women's lacrosse team to an impressive 9-5 win over Fresno State in the Seahawks' first game under head coach
Liz Frisoli.
The teams were tied at 2-2 following a defensive-minded first half before the Seahawks erupted for seven second-half goals. The Green & White held an overwhelming statistical advantage in defeating a Fresno State team that was coming off an 8-6 victory over Monmouth in its season opener.
Wagner outshot the Bulldogs 34-10, won 9-of-16 draw controls while holding a 20-8 edge in ground balls. The Seahawks turned in a brilliant defensive effort, recording 17 turnovers while turning the ball over just five times themselves.
Offensively, Wagner peppered Bulldog goalie Lisa Barnaba all game long. Barnaba wound up with 16 saves on the game while Seahawk sophomore goalie
Katie Ferraro (Owings Mill, MD/McDonogh) came up with two saves in goal.
Freshman midfielder
Olivia Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and sophomore midfielder
Taylor Pastore (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) tallied first-half goals to forge the 2-2 halftime tie. With the game tied at 3-3 early in the second half, the Seahawks ran off three consecutive goals over a span of 6:40 to make it a 6-3 game.
Gegan kick-started the 3-0 Wagner spree by depositing a free position shot at the 21:44 mark to give Wagner the lead for good at 4-3. Less than two minutes later, the Seahawks made it a two-goal cushion by getting out in transition with Mills burying a fastbreak goal off of a pretty feed from sophomore attack
Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview) with 19:29 left.
At the 15:05 mark, Tumolo made it a three-goal game by knocking home an unassisted goal to make it 6-3. Fresno State's Allison Poust got one back for the Bulldogs with 8:57 to play to make it a two-goal game at 6-4 before Wagner responded with another 3-0 scoring run in putting the game out of reach at 9-4. Sophomore midfielder
Stephanie Peterson (Vernon Township, NJ/Vernon) kicked off Wagner's late-game three-goal splurge with an unassisted tally at 5:24 to make it 7-4.
At the 2:13 mark, sophomore midfielder
Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) then got into the act, finding the back of the net after receiving a feed from Mills to increase the lead to 8-4. Mills then sank a free position shot with 58 seconds left as Wagner opened its biggest lead of the game at 9-4.
Fresno State's Anjelica Fuccillo then capped the day's scoring with a goal at the 33-second mark of a Marcy Levatino assist to forge the final score at 9-5.
The Seahawks are next in action on Wednesday, February 19 at 4:00 pm when they travel to Bethlehem, PA for a 4:00 pm game vs. the Mountain Hawks in a makeup of Saturday's season opener that was postponed due to snow.
