RESULTS
Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's swimming & diving team defeated Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) this afternoon, posting a final score of 177.5-122.5. The win, which occurred on both Senior Day and the Green & White's annual Cystic Fibrosis fundraising event, marks just the third time in program history that the Seahawks have upended the Blue Devils, the last of which occurred during the 2003-2004 season. Wagner closes out the dual meet season with a final record of 11-1.
With today's victory, the 2013-2014 squad,
who is tabbed as the favorite to win the 2014 Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship title, set the overall program record for most dual meet wins in a single season (11), while also tapping the record for most consecutive dual meet wins (8), as well as the least amount of dual meet losses (1).
Wagner also nabbed three pool records, as freshman
Anu Nihipali earned the record in both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events with times of 56.24 and 2:05.03, respectively. Senior
Meredith Ketchmark earned the pool record for the 100-yard freestyle event, cruising in with a time of 52.60.
The Seahawks started the day gaining crucial points from divers
Mallory Lee,
Erica Curry, and
Cara Walker. Lee tabbed a second-place finish in the one-meter board, and took third-place on the three-meter board. Curry produced a third-place finish on the one-meter, before earning the gold on the three-meter board. Walker earned sixth-place on both boards.
Following the success of the divers, Wagner's swimmers were quick to add points to their overall tally, earning first-place in the 200-yard medley relay event behind the team of Nihipali,
Katja Claesson,
Samantha Sides, and Ketchmark. Wagner also earned bronze in the event behind
Meghan Mendez,
Kelsey Thomas,
Erin Malone, and
Alexandra Cooney.
Marisa Petrarca,
Kara Lacoste,
Morgan Stoner, and
Kristiana Kalibat finished in fifth-place, further strengthening Wagner's early lead over CCSU.
Amanda Lucia ended teammate
Grace Baird's reign of the 1000-yard freestyle event, powering through to take first. Baird captured second-place, while
Maggie Shaw earned fourth. Ketchmark snatched first-place in the 200-yard freestyle, and teammate
Sarah Menendez came in third.
Nihipali earned gold in the 100-yard backstroke, ahead of Kalibat and Mendez, who took fourth and fifth-place, respectively. Wagner proceeded to a 2-3-5 finish in the 100-yard breaststroke event, behind Claesson, Thomas, and
Kristen Lee.
Lucia tallied her second, first-place finish of the day in the 200-yard butterfly.
Erin Malone earned fifth-place in the event. Wagner added valuable points, with Menendez, Sides, and Rondina earning 2-3-4 in the 50-yard freestyle event, ahead of Ketchmark and Mendendez's first and fourth-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle.
Wagner continued their domination in the pool, as Nihipali earned her second first-place finish of the day in the 200-yard backstroke. Lacoste produced an impressive second-place finish, and
Kaitlin Murtha earned the all-important fourth-place points with her efforts in the event. Claesson took second place in the hard-fought 200-yard breaststroke event, and Lee took fifth-place.
The Seahawks turned out an exciting 1-2-3 finish in the 500-yard freestyle event, with Baird taking gold, Shaw taking silver, and Cooney earning the bronze. Sides grabbed second-place in the 100-yard butterfly event, and teammates Lucia and Malone tabbed third and fourth-place. In the final individual event of the day, the 200-yard individual medley, Wagner assembled yet another 1-2-3 finish, as Nihipali earned her third gold of the meet, and teammates Ketchmark and Lacoste took second and third-place.
Rondina, Menendez, Cooney and Thomas took home second-place in the 400-yard freestyle relay event, while teammates Shaw, Baird, Malone, and Kalibat placed third.
The Green & White return to action when they travel to Cambridge, MA, for the Northeast Conference Championship, where they hope to win their first-ever championship title. The event takes place February 19-22, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
