Brooklyn Heights, NY - Wayne Martin's layup with 24 seconds to play in overtime would prove to be the difference in lifting St. Francis Brooklyn to a 73-72 victory over Wagner at the Pope Center.
The Terriers improve to 14-9 and 5-3 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Seahawks fall to 11-12 and 4-4 in the league.
Wagner had its chances in the final 24 seconds, but had two shots blocked before sophomore
Dwaun Anderson's (Suttons Bay, MI / Michigan State) fade-away jumper bounced off the side of the rim and into Lowell Ulmer's arms with the clock expiring.
Despite the loss, the Seahawks showed their mettle in rallying from a 10-point deficit with 4:16 remaining to force overtime.
St. Francis Brooklyn was up 61-51 and appeared to be in total control following a three-point play from Martin. However, Senior
Kenneth Ortiz (Newark, NJ / Southern Mississippi) had other ideas and quickly answered with the hoop and the harm. After misfiring on the free throw attempt, Ortiz grabbed his own miss and
Marcus Burton (Charlotte, NC / David W. Butler) took advantage with two freebies to make a four-point possession. Anderson then stole the ball on the other end, was fouled in the process before converting both from the line to make it a 61-57 game with 3:20 to go.
The Green & White wasn't done as Anderson repeated the script on the next play, picking Anthony White's pocket and
Jay Harris (Aurora, IL / Valparaiso) reaped the benefits with a three pointer to trim what was a 10-point deficit just over a minute ago to one at 61-60 with 3:04 remaining. After the Terriers came up short on the ensuing possession, Ortiz hit a layup to complete the improbable 11-0 Wagner run and give the Seahawks a 62-61 advantage with 1:55 remaining.
St. Francis Brooklyn quickly reclaimed the lead with a Jalen Cannon three-point play before Brent Jones hit a pair from the line in extending the Terrier advantage to 66-62 with 53 seconds remaining. Ortiz then converted a pair at the line and after a Seahawk defensive stop, Harris canned two freebies to tie the game up at 66-66 and force overtime.
In extra time, Sheldon Hagigal struck first with a pair of free throws with Anderson answering with a layup. Cannon then dunked home a missed layup only to see Harris hit two more free throws to tie it up at 70-70 with 2:41 remaining. Both teams then came up empty over the next minutes and change, before Martin split a pair at the line in staking St. Francis Brooklyn to a 71-70 advantage with 57 seconds remaining. Ortiz was then fouled and hit both from the line in reclaiming the lead for the Green & White at 72-71 while setting up the aforementioned frentic final 44 seconds.
Wagner, which converted on just 1-for-11 in overtime, made good on just 32.4 percent (22-of-68) for the game, including 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from deep. The Seahawks were able to stay in the game thanks to making good on 89.3 percent (25-of-28) from the line, including 92.3 percent (12-of-13) in the final five minutes of regulation and overtime.
The Terriers, meanwhile, shot just 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the floor, but was able to get to get to the line 41 times (27 makes) while also turning 16 offensive rebounds into an 18-10 advantage in second chance points.

Cannon fueled the St. Francis Brooklyn effort with 19 points and 11 rebounds while Martin added 17 points and seven blocks off the bench.
Wagner opened up a 36-28 lead at the break thanks to shooting a blistering 50.0 percent (13-of-26) from the field while converting on 80.0 percent (8-of-10) while holding the Terriers to just 39.1 percent (9-of-23) of shooting. Freshman
Greg Senat (Elmont, NY / Marianapolis Prep (CT)) gave the Seahawks a huge boost off the bench, grabbing what would prove to be a team-high seven rebounds in the opening stanza.
After playing 10 of its last 12 games on the road, Wagner returns to the friendly confines of the Spiro Sports Center to host Fairleigh Dickinson on Thursday, February 6 at 7:00 pm.
