Aaren Edmead (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) was one of three Seahawks to finish in double figures but it wasn't enough as the Wagner men's basketball team fell to local rival, Hofstra, 93-71 on Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
The Green and White fall to 1-3 on the season while the Pride improves to 3-1 and are winners of two straight.
The 5-10 Edmead, who was named the 2014 Long Island Player of the Year by
Newsday and
LongIslandBasketball.Com, led Wagner in scoring with a career-best 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field off the bench. Senior guard
Marcus Burton (Charlotte, NC/David W. Butler) tallied 13 points, with 10 coming in the first half of action while junior forward
Stedman Allen (Bronx, NY/Labett CC (KS) was the third Seahawk in double-digits wit 10 points, which came on 5-of-7 shooting in 25 minutes of play. Sophomore forward
Greg Senat (Elmont, NY/Elmont) contributed eight points in a reserve role while pulling down a team-leading six rebounds.
Hofstra placed four players finish in double-figures, led by Juan'ya Green, who netted a game-high 24 points, with 11 of those coming from the free-throw line, while dishing out a game-best 11 assists in 33 minutes of action. Ameen Tanksley added 17 points, 10coming in the second half of play. Jamall Robinson and Staten Island native Brian Bernardi contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Hofstra opened the contest with back-to-back baskets before 5-10 sophomore forward
Nolan Long (Waterford, CT/Waterford) put the Seahawks on the board off a baseline jumper. Over the next seven minutes, Hofstra extended its lead to 10, at 24-14, while outscoring the Seahawks, 18-12, during this stretch. As the half was coming to a close, senior Burton, whose 10 first-half points came on 4-of-6 shooting, sank an NBA-length three-pointer which narrowly beat the buzzer as the visitors headed into the locker room trailing by 17, 47-30. The Seahawks shot 12-of-24 from the field (50.0 percent) in the opening half.
Long was able to use his length and bulk to muscle in a contested layup chance, after receiving a bounce pass from Burton, for the first points of the second half. After Edmead made a pair of free-throws at the 8:27 mark that brought the deficit to 16, 67-51, the Pride embarked on a decisive 15-1 run that saw the lead elevate to 31, 83-52, with 4:59 left in the contest. Over the final 3:02 in the contest, the Pride scored their final nine points of the game via the free-throw line while the Seahawks didn't get a chance to go to the charity stripe.
For the contest, Wagner converted 28-of-64 from the floor and were held to just 22.2 percent from long range (6-of-27) while generating 13 points off second-chance opportunities while controlling the paint, holding a 36-18 from in close. Hofstra shot a hot 54.5 percent from the field (24-of-44) and close to 60.0 percent from three-point range (10-of-17). The Pride also connected on 35-of-49 from the free-throw line while outrebounding the Seahawks by a 35-32 count, including a 29-11 edge on the defensive glass.
After a brief Thanksgiving break, the Seahawks welcome the University of Pennsylvania to the Spiro Sports Center on Saturday, November 29. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on NEC Front Row, the official online digital network of the Northeast Conference, with Joey Wahler on the call.
