The Seahawks will meet No. 3 seed Central Connecticut in one semifinal on Friday, November 7 in Teaneck, NJ, while No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson will host defending NEC Champion Saint Francis U in the other semifinal contest on Friday. The winners will square off in Sunday's 2014 NEC Championship Game. Both semifinal matches on Friday, as well as Sunday's title game, will be held on the home field of No. 1 seed FDU, who earned the top seed and right to host the entire tourney with a 4-1 win over Saint Francis U.
In capping the regular season with today's victory at Sacred Heart, the Green & White will enter the NEC Championship with a 9-6-3 overall record and, most importantly, a 5-1-2 NEC record while Sacred Heart falls to 8-9-2 on the season, 3-4-1 in league play. FDU will enter the championship with a 13-4-1 overall mark, with the Knights' top seed coming by virtue of a 6-1-1 conference record. Saint Francis U played its best soccer of the season down the stretch and qualified for the fourth and final spot in the championship with a 3-2-3 NEC mark and an overall record of 3-11-5.
Wagner will be playing in its first NEC Championship since 1997.
The weather conditions played a significant role in today's match at Sacred Heart. Aided by 30-mile per hour winds at their back, the Pioneers were able to apply consistent pressure on Wagner for the majority of the opening 45 minutes, outshooting Wagner 12-0 during the first half as the wind made it difficult for the Seahawks to string together good ball movement.
Sophomore
Megan Fritz (Cape Coral, FL / Mariner) broke the scorelees tie by notching the game's lone goal in the 55th minute, placing a penalty kick into the bottom left corner of the goal after being pushed down inside the box. In need of win to qualify for the NEC Championship, the Pioneers fought hard but Wagner held a 7-6 edge in second-half shots. Despite being outshot 18-7 for the game, the Seahawk defense kept Sacred Heart from scoring the equalizer.
Fifth-year senior goalkeeper
Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY / John F. Kennedy) spearheaded Wagner's defensive effort, recording six saves en route to her ninth shutout of the season.
