Staten Island, NY – For the first time in program history, the Wagner women's swimming & diving team defeated the University of Rhode Island (URI) , generating a final score of 167-133. The Seahawks improve to 10-1 on the season in dual meets.
In addition to owning the record for most dual meet wins in program history (10), the 2013-2014 squad has now tied the record for most consecutive dual meet wins (7), a feat first accomplished by the 2005-2006 Wagner team. The only other squad to match this achievement was the 2006-2007 lineup.
The Seahawks started the day off with yet another array of solid performances from divers
Erica Curry,
Mallory Lee, and
Cara Walker, with Curry earning first-place on the one-meter board, and teammates Lee and Walker earning second and fifth-place, respectively. Lee went on to take top-spot on the three-meter board, while Curry grabbed second-place, and Walker finished in fifth-place.
Wagner continued to accumulate points, earning second-place in the 200-yard freestyle relay behind the team of
Meghan Mendez,
Katja Claesson,
Samantha Sides, and
Corinne Rondina.
Kaitlin Murtha,
Kristen Lee,
Erin Malone, and
Morgan Stoner grabbed fourth-place in the event.
Grace Baird maintained her reign of the 1000-yard freestyle event, cruising to a first-place finish. Baird remains undefeated in the 1000, having topped every other competitor in each of Wagner's dual meets. Sophomore
Amanda Lucia battled URI's Chaya Zubludoff throughout the first 600 yards of the event, before pulling away for the final 400 yards to capture second-place.
Maggie Shaw added to the Seahawks' total tally with a fourth-place finish.
In tremendous fashion,
Meredith Ketchmark earned first-place in the 200-yard freestyle event, while teammate
Sarah Menendez seized second-place.
Alexandra Cooney helped to further extend Wagner's lead over the Rams, out-touching URI's Sarah Keshishian by .03 of a second in a thriller of a race to take third-place.
Anu Nihipali captured gold in the 100-yard backstroke, narrowly missing her own pool record by .06 of a second. Also gathering points for Wagner in the event was Sides, who earned fourth-place.
Claesson earned her first individual gold of the day during the 100-yard breaststroke, while teammates
Kelsey Thomas and
Kara Lacoste earned fourth and fifth-place. Lucia dominated the 200-yard butterfly event, earning a decisive first-place finish, as Malone took home the silver, increasing Wagner's ever-growing lead.
The Green & White collected a 2-3-4 finish in the 50-yard freestyle event, behind Menendez, Ketchmark, and Nihipali, right before adding a 3-4-5 finish in the 100-yard freestyle event behind Menendez, Ketchmark, and Cooney. Nihipali earned her second, first-place finish of the day in the 200-yard backstroke, while teammates Lacoste and Murtha took third and fourth-place.
Thomas was triumphant in the 200-yard backstroke event, finishing in first after overtaking URI's Emily Thomesen in the final lap of the event. Teammate Claesson also tallied points for the Seahawks, finishing in third-place. Baird and Lucia produced a 2-3 finish in the 500-yard freestyle event, while Sides and Malone generated a 2-3 finish in the 100-yard butterfly.
Wagner concluded the individual events with second, third, and fourth finishes in the 200-yard individual medley event, behind Lacoste, Thomas, and Stoner. In the final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Seahawks tallied points with second-place and fourth-place finishes.
The Green & White return to action on Tuesday, January 21, when they travel to the Bronx to face Manhattan. The meet is set for a 7:00 p.m. start.
