Wagner Defeats Manhattan 2-1

Box Score

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's soccer team defeated Manhattan 2-1 this afternoon at Hameline Field. The Seahawks improve to a 5-1-1, while the Jaspers fall to 2-5-0.

The Jaspers were first to put points up on the board, as Erica Modena brought the ball into the box before slotting it past Wagner goalkeeper Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY / John F. Kennedy) in the ninth minute to make it a 1-0 match. The Seahawks answered back immediately, as freshman Sydney McNutt (Hatboro, Pa / Hatboro-Horsham) found sophomore Siara Kolpon (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Hills) in front of the net. Kolpon drilled the ball in to bring the score to an even 1-1. Neither team was able to score again in the first half before time expired.

Six minutes into the second half, freshman Megan Fritz (Cape Coral, FL / Mariner) directed the ball through traffic and into the net from 10 yards out to make it 2-1 in Wagner's favor. Manhattan had a chance to tie the game in the 79th minute with a penalty kick, but the ball hit the low right post before ricocheting back into the field of play. Wagner's defense would hold strong for the rest of the match, securing the Wagner victory.

Wagner outshot Manhattan 16-12, while Marcy made a total of nine saves in net.

The Seahawks host NJIT on Friday, September 20th, at Hameline Field. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
