Water Polo Splits Two MAAC Games

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Seahawks got off to a fast start on the day, defeating St. Francis Brooklyn 18-5, before dropping a game to Iona, 6-5, in two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) games. Wagner now sits at 21-10 (6-2 MAAC) on the season.

In the 18-5 win over St. Francis Brooklyn, the Green and White had a big second quarter, scoring eight goals in the frame while only allowing one, and going into half up 11-2.

Sophomore Jessica Burdge (Stockton, CA / St. Mary's) scored three of her game-high four goals in the second quarter, while classmate Rachel Burns (Greenlane, Auckland, New Zealand / Diocesan School for Girls) had four of her game-high six assists in the quarter.

For the game, freshmen Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia / Mountain Creek) and Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD / Broadneck) scored three goals each. Senior goalie Laura Karbach (Abington, PA / Germantown Academy) had 18 saves in the game, while adding three steals.
During the second game, a 6-5 loss to Iona, Wagner was unable to avenge an overtime one-goal loss to the Gaels from two weeks ago.

The Seahawks were unable to score in the first quarter, trailing Iona 2-0 going into the second. Wagner was able to tie the score by halftime however, as Burdge found the net twice in the second quarter and Lundgren scored once making the score 3-3 at halftime.

Wagner had another scoreless quarter in the third, while Iona scored twice to go up 5-3. Both Lundgren and Burdge were able to find the net in the fourth, but it would not be enough as the Gaels scored once in the fourth to make the final score 6-5.

Karbach had another impressive performance in the net, giving up just six goals while saving 14 shots and adding three steals.

Next weekend will provide the Green and White with four New York City games, as Wagner will continue MAAC play with two games in Brooklyn on Saturday, April 13th, followed by the only two home games of the season the next day, April 13th.
