Water Polo Earns Two Wins At St. Francis

Brooklyn, NY – In the final weekend of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular-season play, the Seahawks got two wins at St. Francis Brooklyn over Siena and Villanova. Wagner (23-10, 8-2 MAAC) topped the Saints 16-5 in the first game, then had a close one against the Wildcats, beating Villanova 11-10.

In game one, eight different Seahawks got in on the scoring, propelling Wagner to the 16-5 victory. Stacy McGregor (Sinking Spring, PA / Wilson) led Wagner in scoring for the first time this season, netting three goals in the game. The first and fourth quarters were big for the Seahawks in the game, as the team scored four goals and limited Siena to zero goals in both quarters.

The Wagner/Villanova game was one that Wagner had to have in order to stay in the running for the regular season MAAC Championship. The Wildcats were not going to make it an easy contest for Wagner however, providing a close game throughout the second half.

Jessica Burdge (Stockton, CA / St. Mary's) scored her 100th goal of the season to get Wagner on the board in the first quarter. After Villanova tied the game 1-1, Rachel Burns (Greenlane, Auckland, New Zealand / Diocesan School for Girls) scored a goal to make it 2-1, then Burdge scored 43 seconds after the Burns score to end the first period up 3-1.

The Seahawks scored the first four goals of the second quarter, increasing the lead to 7-1. McGregor and Burdge, along with Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD / Broadneck) and Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia / Mountain Creek) scored in the quarter, making it a 6-0 Wagner run.

The Wildcats would then counter, scoring the next three goals to end the half trailing 7-4. Villanova then made it a 5-0 run, getting within one goal of Wagner in the middle of the third.

Burdge, Doerfler and McGregor scored later in the third as Villanova added one more goal to end the quarter with Wagner in the lead, 10-7.

The Wagner defense did bend, but failed to break in the fourth quarter. Villanova out-scored the Green and White 3-1 in the quarter, but it would not be enough as Wagner would earn the win, 11-10.

Leading in the scoring column was Burdge with four goals, followed by McGregor and Doerfler with two each. Goalie Laura Karbach (Abington, PA / Germantown Academy) saved four shots on the game.

Wagner now sits at 23-10 (8-2 MAAC) and has two games remaining before the MAAC Championships. The Seahawks will battle VMI at 12:00 pm tomorrow, before a show-down with current first-place Marist at 4:30 pm.
