Philadelphia, PA – The Seahawks made it a perfect weekend, winning the second game of two in Philadelphia over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Marist, 9-8. Wagner held off a fourth quarter comeback by the Red Foxes, to improve to 20-9 (5-1 MAAC) on the season.
Coming off of a six-goal game against VMI hours before, freshman
Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia / Mountain Creek) got the scoring started for Wagner, when
Jessica Burdge (Stockton, CA / St. Mary's) found her for the first score of the game. The Green and White then led 2-0 after the first quarter when
Stacy McGregor (Sinking Spring, PA / Wilson) found Burdge for her first of five goals in the contest.
In the second quarter, freshman
Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD / Broadneck) got it going, scoring two goals from Burdge and
Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA / San Ramon Valley). With the assist, along with another one in the fourth quarter, Rodriguez broke the programs single-season assist record as she now has 65 on the year.
The Seahawks took a 6-2 lead into the half after McGregor and Burdge added two more goals in the second quarter. Burdge found the net twice in the third quarter for the only Wagner goals, as Marist was able to equal the Seahawk output, going into the final frame leading 8-4.
In the fourth, Marist mounted a comeback, scoring four goals to just a lone Burdge goal. The defense did not break for Wagner, as they won 9-8 in the end. Goalie
Laura Karbach (Abington, PA / Germantown Academy) was big in the win, saving nine shots and adding two steals.
Wagner has now won seven of their last eight games, improving to 20-9 on the season and receiving a vote in the latest Collegiate Water Polo poll.
Next weekend, the Seahawks will travel to Poughkeepsie, NY for two games against MAAC opponents St. Francis Brooklyn, and Iona.
