Wagner Earns First MAAC Victory Of Season Over Siena

Lexington, VA – Wagner started Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play today against Siena, coming into a weekend with four matches against four MAAC opponents. The Seahawks started the weekend off right, exploding for a 16-7 win over the Saints, and improving to 16-8 on the season.

Wagner got off to a fast start in part by the play of Rachel Burns (Greenlane, Auckland, New Zealand / Diocesan School for Girls). The sophomore scored the first Seahawk goal of the game off of an assist from freshman Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA / San Ramon Valley). Goalie Laura Karbach (Abington, PA / Germantown Academy) also found Burns in the period for her second goal of the game.

Later in the first quarter, Burns found Rodriguez for her first of four goals on the afternoon, as the Seahawks ended the first quarter up 4-2. Burns had a season-high five points in the game, coming off of two goals and three assists.

While Burns came up big in the first quarter, classmate Jessica Burdge (Stockton, CA / St. Mary's) decided to do the same in the second quarter. Burdge tallied all four of her goals in the second quarter, two of them coming off of assists from sophomore Michelle Greenough (Davis, CA / Davis).

The Green and White ended the first half up 10-4, but did not let up on the nets in the second half. Rodriguez, alongside Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD / Broadneck) and Stacy McGregor (Sinking Spring, PA / Wilson) scored a goal each in the third quarter, putting the Seahawks up 13-6 at the end of the frame.

In the fourth, Wagner got three more goals, again from Rodriguez, Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia / Mountain Creek), and Maura McGinley (King of Prussia, PA / Upper Merion), who scored her first goal of the season.

On the defensive side, Karbach stood her ground saving seven Saints shots, and recording two steals in the process.
