Women’s Lacrosse Drops NEC Opener At Mount St. Mary’s 9-6

Trailing 7-1 late in the first half, the Wagner women's lacrosse team went on a 5-1 run bridging the two halves to make it an 8-6 game with 13 minutes to play but Mount St. Mary's was able to notch the final tally and hold on for a 9-6 win in the Northeast Conference (NEC) openers for both schools.

In suffering their fourth straight defeat, the Seahawks fall to 4-5 on the season, 0-1 in the NEC while the Mountaineers improve to 2-7 overall, 1-0 in league play.

Freshmen Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/ Clearview) and Tori McGrath (Albany. NY/ Bethlehem Central) scored two goals apiece for the Seahawks while another freshman, Stephanie Peterson (Vernon, NJ/ Vernon Township), and senior Annie O'Connor (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) added one goal apiece. Senior Erika Bulken (Baldwinsville, NY/ C.W. Baker) dished out two assists while sophomore Jessica Mills (Vernon Township, NJ/ Vernon) handed out one assist. Freshman Katie Ferraro (Owings Mill, MD/ McDonogh) had six saves for the Seahawks while playing her home state of Maryland.

The Mount was led by the four points registered by Lindsay Diaz on three goals and one assist while Megan Gluck and Erin Sapp chipped in with two goals apiece. In goal, Sarah Jane Leder came up with four saves in recording the win.

This matchup was extremely close statistically with Mount holding 20-19 edge in shots and a 22-20 lead in ground balls while Wagner held a 10-7 advantage in draw controls. The Seahawks committed 23 turnovers to the Mountaineers' 18 but the most telling statistic of the game came in free-position shots where the Mount was successful on 5-of-6 tries while Wagner the Seahawks were 0-of-5 on their free-position shots.

The Seahawks will face Monmouth on Sunday, March 24 in West Long Branch, NJ at 1:00 pm.
