St. Francis Brooklyn Sinks Wagner 76-75 On Last-Second Shot

Box Score / Box Score (PDF) / Highlights / Dwaun Anderson Putback Dunk

Brooklyn Heights, NY -
Dre Calloway's driving layup with just 2.8 seconds remaining was the difference in St. Francis Brooklyn's 76-75 win over Wagner in Northeast Conference (NEC) play at the Pope Center. The Seahawks, which had erased a 10-point second half deficit, fall to 15-11 and 9-6 in the NEC while the Terriers improve to 11-15 and 7-8 in the league.

Up just three at the half, St. Francis Brooklyn quickly extended its lead to a game-high 10 at 56-46 with 13:45 remaining in the game. In dire need of a spark, freshman Dwaun Anderson (Suttons Bay, MI / Suttons Bay / Michigan State) delivered this thunderous putback dunk on the ensuing possession.

With the Terrier lead back out to 10 at 60-50 with just over 11 minutes remaining, Travis Nichols missed a three pointer and Anderson scooped up the ball and took it coast-to-coast for an old-fashioned three-point play. After forcing a turnover on the ensuing possession, Anderson drilled a jumper from the corner and sophomore Mario Moody (East Orange, NJ / East Orange Campus) followed with a layup to trim the deficit to 60-57 at the 10:23 mark of the second half. Lowell Ulmer briefly answered on the other end, before senior Jonathon Williams (Richmond, CA / Kennedy / City College of San Francisco) converted a layup to draw the visitors to 62-61 with just under eight minutes to play while capping an 11-2 run.

The Seahawks would eventually tie the game up at 66-66 with 5:22 remaining on a Williams free throw, only to see St. Francis Brooklyn score four-straight points to regain command of the game with just over four minutes to play.

Following a timeout, Williams drew the foul and hit both from the line. Sophomore Marcus Burton (Charlotte, NC / David W. Butler) then stole the ball and tied the game up at 70-70 with a layup. The North Carolina native again swiped the ball on the next Terrier possession and split a pair from the line to give the Green & White its first lead of the second half at 71-70 with 3:30 to play.

The Terriers quickly reclaimed the lead with three-straight free throws, before junior Kenneth Ortiz (Newark, NJ / Science Park / Southern Mississippi) tied it up at 73-73 with a layup at the 2:20 mark. Ulmer then split a pair from the line and junior Latif Rivers (Elizabeth, NJ / Avon Old Farms (CT)) hit a jumper at the top of the key to give Wagner a 75-74 lead with just 1:33 to play.

The Seahawk defense then held strong on the other end and had a chance to add to the lead, only to see Ortiz whistled for an offensive foul with 21 seconds remaining. Calloway then hit a contested layup to provide the aforementioned final 76-75 score as Rivers' last-second three pointer from midcourt was no good.

Wagner, which had outshot its previous eight opponents, finished up shooting a respectable 42.6 percent (29-of-68) from the field and 80.0 percent (16-of-20) from the line. However, the Seahawks made good on just 1-of-16 (.063) from long range while being outrebounded by a 41-34 margin.

St. Francis Brooklyn, meanwhile, shot 48.2 percent (27-for-56) from the field, but converted on just 26.7 percent (4-for-15) from deep and 66.7 percent (18-for-27) from the line.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair that saw 15 lead changes and six ties, before the Terriers assumed command 41-38 halftime lead on a Ben Mockford three pointer.

Williams led the way in scoring for the team-best 12th time this year, finishing with 16 points. Ortiz also had 12 points and a game-high six assists and three steals. Leading the second-unit was Burton, who also notched 12 points. Rounding out the double-digit scorers was Rivers, who had 10 markers.

Despite falling just short of double-figures, Anderson was extremely impressive with nine points and seven rebounds, both of which were career-highs.

Mockford led all scorers with 18 points while Nichols scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half to lead the way for St. Francis Brooklyn.

Wagner returns home to host LIU Brooklyn on Sunday, February 24 at 8:00 pm in a game that will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
