Women's Soccer Concludes Record Season With 3-1 Loss at CCSU

RESULTS

New Britain, CT - The Wagner women's soccer team fell to Central Connecticut (CCSU) 3-1 this afternoon, concluding its record-setting season with an overall record of 11-5-2, including a 4-3-1 record in Northeast Conference (NEC) play. CCSU improves to 7-11 on the season, and 5-3 in conference play.

With the loss, the Seahawks narrowly miss out on a trip to the 2013 NEC Championship, while the Blue Devils secure one of the four spots in the tournament, earning a trip to Saint Francis U for the tournament, which takes place November 8-10.

Throughout the first half, both teams had opportunities to score, yet were unable to capitalize. Finally, in the 42nd minute, freshman Gabrielle Davis connected with a bouncing ball just inside the penalty box, sending it past the CCSU goalkeeper to give Wagner the 1-0 lead. The goal marked Davis' second goal of the season.

Wagner held that 1-0 advantage into the second half before the Blue Devils tied the game in the 48th, when Kerriann Welch sent a bouncing shot past the Wagner defensive line and into the net. CCSU scored again in the 69th minute off of a free kick just outside of the penalty box, when Rachel Cerrone found the top corner of the net to make it 2-1 in CCSU's favor.

The Blue Devils then tacked on the match's final goal when Kelly Halligan chipped the ball into the right side of the net in the 69th minute. Wagner was unable to answer before the final whistle.

Despite narrowly falling short of reaching the program's first berth in the NEC Championship since the 1997 Seahawk squad made it in the conference's first season of sponsoring women's soccer,  2013 was a landmark season. The 2013 Seahawks set school records for most overall wins in a season (11), as well as most non-conference , (7), and most conference wins (4) in a single season.

The Seahawks also earned their share of individual honors as Samantha Jensen was tabbed as NEC player of the week twice, while Siara Kolpon also got the nod on one occasion. In addition, Katie Marcy received two NEC Defensive Player of the Week awards, Megan Fritz earned a pair of NEC Rookie of the Week honors while Amanda Buck picked up one NEC Rookie of the Week award.
