Baltimore, MD - Junior
Marcus Burton (Charlotte, NC / David W. Butler) scored 21 points in just 14 minutes of action while senior
Latif Rivers (Elizabeth, NJ / Avon Old Farms (CT)) notched 20 to lead Wagner (2-2) to a dominating 102-87 win at Coppin State (1-2).
Senior
Kenneth Ortiz (Newark, NJ / Southern Mississippi) recorded his fourth career double-double with 12 points and 10 assists while helping to facilitate a dominating Seahawk offense that shot a blistering 59.3 percent (35-for-59) from the floor, including 57.1 percent (12-for-21) from long range, with 23 assists.
The first half was a back-and-fourth affair that featured seven ties and eight lead changes, until Wagner assumed a 42-37 lead at the break thanks to a 6-2 run.
In the early going, Coppin State was red-hot from the field in converting on seven of its first 10 shots before the Seahawk defense limited the Eagles to just 2-of-17 from the field the rest of the stanza.
Despite being able to convert just two field goals over the final 12 minutes of the half, Coppin State was able to stay close due to the fact it converted on 15-of-17 from the line.
After halftime, Wagner took its offensive game to another level with a dominating 60-point half that saw the Seahawks shoot a blistering 67.6 percent (23-for-34) from the field, including 58.3 percent (7-for-12) from long range.
However, in the early part of the second half it appeared as though the Eagles were on the verge of making a big rally. Coppin State scored seven of the first 11 points of the second half to trim the deficit to 46-44 with 17:32 to play. Wagner, though, would have none of that.
Rivers knocked down a triple on the ensuing possession, before corralling the rebound on the opposite end. Senior
Naofall Folahan (Cotonou, Republic of Benin / Wilbraham & Monson Academy (MA)) then delivered his second dunk of the game off a nifty pass from Ortiz while extending the lead to seven and forcing a timeout.
Jerimyjah Batts momentarily stopped the bleeding with a free throw, before the Seahawks went back to work on the offensive end. Junior
Mario Moody (Jersey City, NJ / East Orange Campus) slammed home an offensive rebound, before Burton canned a fast break three pointer to push the lead out to 58-47 with 13:14 to play. Following a Coppin State free throw, sophomore
Dwaun Anderson (Suttons Bay, MI / Michigan Bay) drained a triple of his own to cap a 15-4 run while extending the Green & White lead out to an insurmountable 61-48 with 12:40 to play.
The homestanding Eagles would continue to fight and trimmed the deficits to single digits at 63-54 with just 11:47 to play, before Burton hit a pair of triples as Coppin State would get no closer the rest of the way.
All 11 Wagner players that saw action scored as Moody joined the backcourt trio of Burton, Ortiz and Rivers in double-figures with 11 points, highlighted by four ferocious dunks including full court, fast break slam that seemed to break the Coppin State will.
Andre Armstrong faced five Eagle players in double-figures with 19 points.
The Seahawks return to action against Vermont on Thursday, November 21 at 7:00 pm.
