Another Win, Another Pool Record As Wagner Defeats Bryant 153-101

RESULTS

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner swimming & diving team earned a decisive 153-101 win over the Bulldogs of Bryant University this afternoon. Wagner is now 3-0 on the season in dual meets, as well as 3-0 at home. Bryant falls to 1-1 on the season.

This is also Wagner's best start on the season in dual meets since the 2011-2012 season, and the best start at home since the 2010-2011 season. Wagner last defeated Bryant in a dual meet during the 2011-2012 season.

The Seahawks started strong in their campaign against Bryant, as junior Mallory Lee earned gold in both the one and three-meter boards, while sophomore Erica Curry earned took home silver on both boards. Senior Cara Walker earned fourth. All three divers earned season-best scores.

Following the divers' solid performances, the Seahawk swim squad earned the first of many 1-2 finishes, beginning with the 200-yard Medley Relay. Taking top prize with a time of 1:48.78 was Anu Nihipali, Kelsey Thomas, Meredith Ketchmark and Sarah Menendez. Earning the second-place finish was Erin Malone, Katja Claesson, Samantha Sides, and Corinne Rondina, in a time of 1:49.97, a new best time for that relay team.

Distance specialist Grace Baird led the way in the 1000-yard freestyle, earning first place with a time of 10:30.88. She was followed by senior Alexandra Cooney, who earned silver with a time of 10:46.24, a new season-best time. Fellow senior Kristiana Kalibat pulled in points for Wagner as well, taking fifth place in a time of 10:55.31, a season-best time for her. Baird also earned first in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking in at 5:11.49, and earning herself a new season-best time.

Ketchmark captured first place in the 500-yard freestyle event, coming in with a time of 1:54.26. Junior Michelle Greenough earned fourth place, with a time of 1:59.76, while sophomore Maggie Shaw earned fifth place and a season-best 2:00.30. Nihipali's time of 56.50 was good enough for first place in the 100-yard backstroke, while Sides cruised into third-place with a time of 1:02.30. Meghan Mendez earned fourth place, as well as a season-best 1:02.77.

The rookie Claesson nabbed first place in the 100-yard breaststroke event with a time of 1:07.59, while teammate Thomas won silver with a time of 1:08.94. Sophomore Kara Lacoste placed fourth with a 1:10.05. Senior Kristin Lee earned a season-best time of 1:12.53 in the event as well.

Wagner tabbed a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard butterfly, with sophomore Amanda Lucia earning first place and a time of 2:06.67. Malone took silver in the event with a time of 2:12.79, while sophomore Kaitlin Murtha came in fifth, with a time of 2:18.78.

The Seahawks earned an impressive 1-2-3 finish in the 50-yard freestyle event. In her 50-yard freestyle debut, Nihipali earned gold, sailing in with a time of 24.54. Following her was Menendez and Rondina, who nabbed times of 25.01 and 25.20, respectively. Wagner also earned gold and silver in the 100-yard freestyle event, behind Ketchmark's speedy 53.51 and Menendez's 54.16. Rondina scored another season-best, serving up a 54.82 to grab fourth-place. Freshman Marisa Petrarca also joined the season-best club, earning a time of 1:01.45.

Junior Morgan Stoner earned second place, while Murtha took third; both swimmers earned season-best times with 2:11.66 and 2:11.78, respectively. Kalibat also accrued points for the Seahawks, earning fourth place and a time of 2:13.68.

The Green & White tallied yet another 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard breaststroke event, with Thomas earning gold with a 2:26.53, Claesson taking silver with a 2:27.23, and Lacoste rounding out the trio to take home bronze, with a time of 2:30.67. Shaw swam to another season-best time in the 500-yard freestyle, capturing third-place with a time of 5:20.44.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Wagner once again went 1-2-3, with Lucia earning first with a 58.53, Sides taking second with a 59.92, and Malone earning third with a 1:00.44. In the last individual event of the meet, the 200-yard Individual Medley, the Seahawks grabbed their final 1-2-3 finish behind Lacoste's first-place nabbing, season-best time of 2:12.93. Greenough finished in second-place with a 2:14.20, while Thomas earned third with a time of 2:14.58.

In the last event of the meet, behind Nihipali, Rondina, Menendez, and Ketchmark, Wagner broke their eighth pool record this season, earning first place in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 3:34.39. After all was said and done, the Seahawks earned 14 season-best swim times and five season-best dive scores.

The Green & White return to action when they travel to Piscataway, NJ to face Rutgers on Friday, October 25th at 4:00 p.m.
