Wagner Breaks Three Records In 172-128 Win Over UVM

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's swimming & diving team started off with a bang in their 172-128 victory over the University of Vermont (UVM) this afternoon, as sophomore Erica Curry took first place in both the one and three-meter boards. Junior Mallory Lee earned bronze on both boards, while senior Cara Walker placed seventh.

In addition to defeating UVM, Wagner earned a trio of new pool records this afternoon, following their powerful performance last week against LIU Post (10/5), in which they broke four pool records and one school record.

Setting the pool record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:47.64 was the team of Anu Nihipali, Kelsey Thomas, Meredith Ketchmark, and Sarah Menendez, who beat the previous record by .44 of a second. Senior Ketchmark broke the 200-yard free record by .78 of a second, clocking in with a time of 1:52.98. Fellow senior Thomas broke the pool record in the 200-yard breaststroke by .45 of a second, earning a time of 2.25.27.

Also grabbing points for the Seahawks in the 200-yard freestyle was Menendez, who came in 5th with a time of 1:59.55.

Nihipali, a freshman, won the 100-yard backstroke for the second meet in a row with a time of 56.63, just missing her own school and pool record of 56.41. Sophomore Kara Lacoste earned fifth place with a time of 1:02.05. Freshman Katja Claesson took gold in the 100-yard breast with a time of 1:07.38, narrowly missing the pool record of 1:07.25. Thomas, along with junior Michelle Greenough rounded out the event in a 2-3 finish.

Keeping the momentum going for the Seahawks was sophomore Amanda Lucia, who earned first-place in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:06.61. Sophomore Erin Malone took bronze in the event, while sophomore Kaitlin Martha earned fifth. Menendez and Corinne Rondina tied for third in the 50-yard freestyle event with a time of 25.08.

Ketchmark earned second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.12, while teammate Rondina took fifth. Nihipali continued to make waves, earning gold in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:06.66, while Lacoste came in fifth. Claesson came in second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:29.46.

Freshman Grace Baird earned gold in the 500-yard freestyle, with a time of 5:12.78, while senior Alexandra Cooney took third with a time of 5:15.09. Senior Kristiana Kalibat took home fifth-place with a time of 5:22.49. Grabbing the 2-3 finish in the 100-yard butterfly was Lucia, with a time of 58.44, and Malone, with a time of 59.89. Coming in fifth for the Seahawks was Sides, with a time of 1:00.85.

Nihipali earned yet another first place, this time in the 200-yard individual medley (IM) with a time of 2:11.15. Lacoste cruised into third place with a time of 2:13.64, while Thomas earned fourth with her showing of 2:14.37. In the final event of the meet, the 200-yard freestyle relay, Wagner's team of Menendez, Sides, Rondina, and Ketchmarck earned silver with a time of 1:38.25.
