Fairfield, CT – Senior
Julie Vigliotti (Staten Island, NY/ Notre Dame Academy) scored the game's lone goal, sophomore
Maureen Vetter (Brookfield, CT/ Brookfield) made a career-high 14 saves, and the Wagner College women's soccer team defeated Sacred Heart, 1-0, on a rainy Friday night at Campus Field. With the win the Green & White improve to 4-7 on the season, and 1-1 in NEC play, while Sacred Heart falls to 4-6, and 1-1 in the NEC.
The two teams played a scoreless first half, in which Vetter turned away all five Pioneer shots on goal. Sacred Heart goalie Sydney Judkins stopped all three Seahawk shots in the opening stanza.
The Pioneers tested Vetter early and often in the second half, attempting 20 shots and nine on goal. Wagner tallied a single shot on goal in the final 45 minutes of action, but it was the only one to make it onto the rain-soaked scoreboard.
In the 69th minute, junior
Jackie Nicholas (Rockville Centre, NY/ South Side) found Vigliotti, who drove the shot past Judkins from 20 yards out for the game's deciding tally.
"This is a big win for us, as we had to overcome torrential rain and playing on the road against a team we have not had a lot of success against," said head women's soccer coach
Mike Minielli. "We found a way to get a goal and our defense and an outstanding performance in goal by
Maureen Vetter took care of the rest."
Wagner returns to action on Sunday, September 30, when the Seahawks travel over the Verrazano for a 3:00 p.m. match against LIU-Brooklyn.
