Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's soccer team was defeated by Stony Brook, 3-1, on Friday afternoon in the 2012 home opener at Wagner College Stadium. With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 0-3 while Seawolves improve to 1-1-1 with the win.
Junior forward
Jackie Nicholas (Rockville Centre, NY/ South Side) provided the Green & White's lone goal of the afternoon, putting Wagner on top 1-0 in the 29th minute. Nicholas's first tally of 2012 came off an assist from senior midfielder
Monica Zurich (Montvale, NJ/ Pascack Hills).
Stony Brook answered back in the final second of the first half, as Danielle Fuller capitalized on a turnover in front of the Seahawk net, hitting a sprinting Priscilla Wiggins for the game-tying goal which came with just 0.7 seconds left on the clock.
The Seawolves jumped ahead in the 65th minute, as Raven Edwards took a pass from Larissa Nysch, and drove it into the back of the net to make it 2-1. Just over a minute later, Sa'sha Kershaw added to the lead, taking a pass from Tessa Devereaux and burying the goal to provide 3-1 margin.
Sophomore
Lisa Capelli (Manalapan, NJ/ Red Bank Catholic) tallied seven saves in goal for the Green & White, while Stony Brook's Ashley Castanio recorded two stops.
The Seahawks return to action on Monday, Aug. 27 at 4:00 pm, when Wagner welcomes Saint Peter's to Grymes Hill.
