Water Polo Improves to 8-1 MAAC Record

Loudonville, NY – The Wagner water polo team improved to an 8-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference record following a sweep of their two matches today.  The Seahawks tackled the Terriers of St. Francis (N.Y.) 15-8 before defeating the Villanova Wildcats 18-6.

Starting off with a narrow 4-2 lead over the Terriers, Wagner knocked in another four goals in the second while allowing two more on the St. Francis (N.Y.) side of the scoreboard.  The Terriers came back within one as they tallied four in the third quarter and the Seahawks notched on one.  With the score set at 9-8 headed into the final stanza, Wagner held the Terriers scoreless in the fourth quarter and added six tallies to fashion the final score at 15-8.

Senior co-captain Lauren French (Colmar, PA / North Penn) was first to put Wagner on the scoreboard followed by fellow captain Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA / Wilson).  Rookie Rachel Burns (Greenlane, Auckland, New Zealand / Diocesan School for Girls) and senior Molly Robinson (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) followed in suite to give Wagner the 4-2 lead at the end of the first eight minutes.

After a Terrier goal, senior Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) tacked on her first goal of the game followed by one more each from French and Robinson.  Sophomore Sidney Hoshko (Coronado, CA / Coronado) rounded out the first half scoring as she sent one past the Terrier defense from directly in front of the net.

Following the break, the Terriers were on the attack as they notched on four.  French hit the lone Seahawk goal of the third period to set the score at 9-8 headed into the final stanza.

Holding strong defensively, Wagner kept the Terriers scoreless and continued to add on six more points.  Freshman Michelle Greenough (Davis, CA / Davis) starting the Seahawk scoring trend before Robinson hit back-to-back goals.  Both French and Beck succeeded in scoring yet again for the Green & White as Greenough sent the final Wagner goal into the net as the Seahawks captured the 15-8 victory.

Junior goalkeeper Laura Karbach (Abington, PA / Germantown Academy) recorded six saves in the win.

Following a substantial 7-3 lead after the first quarter, Wagner hit six more first half goals while allowing Villanova only two.  Holding the Wildcats scoreless in the third quarter, Wagner added four additional points to the scoreboard before notching on one lone fourth period point and allowing one.

Robinson started the scoring for the Seahawks followed by goals from French, Greenough and back-to-back Beck goals.  Sophomore Kaylee Ginnane (Tampa, FL / Coronado, CA) continued to put points on the scoreboard as she knocked in her first goal of the day.  Junior Katie Jordan (Westlake Village, CA / Agoura) rounded out the first quarter scoring as the Golden State native sent a shot past the Wildcat defense and into the net.

With the score set at 7-3, the second quarter saw six more Seahawk goals and two Villanova points.

Sophomore Stacy McGregor (Sinking Spring, PA / Wilson) put the Green & White up by five with a solid shot from the outside corner.  Beck continued to knock in another back-to-back series before Greenough sent her second goal of the game into the net. 

Rounding out the second quarter scoring, Hoshko filed her first goal of the game away as Beck sent her fifth into the back of the net to set the score at 13-5 at the half.

Keeping the Wildcats scoreless in the third, Wagner saw one more McGregor goal before French hit back-to-back shots from the center.  Ginnane nailed the fourth goal of the period to put the Seahawks up 17-5.

Villanova notched on one goal in the final quarter as sophomore Ashton Cline (Carlisle, PA / Cumberland Valley) sailed the final point of the match past the Wildcat defense to secure the 18-6 Wagner victory.

Karbach recorded five saves in the win.

The Seahawks return to action on Saturday, April 14 against Virginia Military Institute (VMI) at 1:00 PM and Marist at 5:30 PM before concluding regular season conference play on Sunday, April 15 against Iona.  Last time out, Wagner shut out VMI 18-0, defeated Marist 10-9 and dropped their only conference loss of the season to Iona 10-9.
