Lawrenceville, NJ -
The Wagner men's tennis team defeated Rider 6-1 to snap the program's 59 match losing streak, dating back to the 2007-2008 season.

The Seahawks jumped out in front early by virtue of winning the doubles' point.  Sophomores Danil Ovechkin (Staten Island, NY / Pendleton School (FL)) and David Garzon (Guttenberg, NJ / Memorial) combined to post an 8-4 victory at No. 1

"The No. 1 doubles team got us started with the win and Danil and David both provided great serving while dominating the net," said head coach Joel Javan.

Juniors Christian Rautenstrauch (Charlotte, NC / Providence Day) and Taylor Santoro (Absecon, NJ / St. Augustine Prep) then secured the doubles point with an 8-6 victory at No. 3.

In singles play, Ovechkin posted an easy 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 for his team-leading 10th victory of the year. Garzon then made it 3-0 with a win at No. 3 as his opponent retired due to injury. Freshman Matthew Richards (Absecon, NJ / St. Augustine Prep) then clinched the team victory with his second win of the year in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Following a Bronc victory at No. 3 singles, Rautenstrauch posted an easy 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles. Santoro then capped the team victory with his first win of the year at No. 6 singles by a 6-2, 6-3 count.

The Green & White's victory was the first since a 4-2 win over St. Francis (NY) on April 18, 2008 while the triumph over Rider was the first against a non conference opponent since besting UMES 4-2 on March 17, 2007.

Wagner closes out regular season play on with matches against Saint Francis (NY) and St. Francis (NY) on April 14, 2012.
