The Wagner Water Polo team finished 2-0 in the opening day of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play, defeating both Marist College 10-9, and Siena College 15-3.
Wagner vs. Marist
Senior
Molly Robinson (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) got the Seahawks started against Marist, finding the back of the net off of a pass from fellow senior
Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA / Wilson). Following a drawn exclusion by freshman
Michelle Greenough (Davis, CA / Davis), Robinson completed a wonderful pass to Beck, who successfully placed the ball between the pipes, putting Wagner up 2-0. Though Marist answered back with one goal, the Green & White led the game 2-1 going into the second quarter.
At the beginning of the second quarter, sophomore
Kaylee Ginnane (Tampa, FL / Coronado, CA) found senior
Lauren French (Colmar, PA / North Penn) open in the middle of the cage to put Wagner up 3-1. French then converted her second consecutive goal off a stellar pass from junior goalie
Laura Karbach (Abington, PA / Germantown Academy), shortly before senior
Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) created a man-up possession. Hannings followed through to capitalize on the extra-man opportunity by throwing the assist to Beck for Beck's second goal of the game, putting Wagner on top 5-1. Marist then reeled off three unanswered goals to draw to within 5-4 at intermission.
The Seahawks dominated the third quarter as freshman
Rachel Burns (Greenlane, Auckland, New Zealand) drew an exclusion which effectively set up a goal by Hannings . On a counter-attack opportunity, Beck tallied yet another assist, providing French with a beautiful pass that was easily put away. The Green & White also received a goal from Greenough with the assist from Hannings, just before sophomore
Ashton Cline (Carlisle, PA / Cumberland Valley) connected with Beck, who converted her hird goal of the game. Marist could only place one shot in the back of the net near the end of the period to make it 9-5.
With eight minutes remaining, Hannings scored her second goal of the game off a pass from Greenough on a man-up possession created by French. Though the Red Foxes would tally four more goals in the final eight minutes, Wagner hung on to the 10-9 victory. Karbach had nine blocks, one assist, and three steals in the win.
Wagner vs. Siena
In their second match of the day, 10 different Seahawks scored in a punishing 15-3 victory over Siena College. Robinson recorded two goals in the first quarter, while both Greenough and Beck registered one goal each. The Saints could not answer back as the score reached 4-0 at the end of the first eight minutes.
Though the Saints would knock in two goals in the second quarter, the Green & White responded with two more goals from seniors Beck and Robinson to put Wagner in front 6-2 going into the second half.
Wagner commanded the third quarter, starting with an unassisted counter-goal by Beck. Beck would have yet another goal in the third, taking advantage of the 5m penalty drawn by Burns. French put another goal away just before Greenough found sophomore
Stacy McGregor (Sinking Spring, PA / Wilson) open in front of the net. Sophomore
Maura McGinley (King of Prussia, PA / Upper Merion) completed a spot-on pass to fellow sophomore
Sidney Hoshko (Coronado, CA / Coronado), while the Seahawk defense continued to keep the Saints off the scoreboard.
Heading into the final quarter, the Seahawks' held a sizeable 11-2 lead. Off of an exclusion drawn by Greenough, Burns presented the ball to junior
Leslie Poole (Downey, CA / Warren), who placed the ball perfectly in the back of the net. Burns would provide yet another superb assist, this time to Cline, right before putting the ball away herself on an unassisted counter-attack goal. The Saints were able to register one more goal before McGinley rounded out the Seahawk scoring frenzy on a shot outside the 5m line to fashionn the final score a 15-3.
