Water Polo Splits Day Two at Bucknell

– The Wagner water polo team split the second day of the Bucknell Invitational after capturing a 9-8 come from behind victory over the hosting Bison before falling 12-11 to Brown later in the afternoon.  With the split, Wagner falls to a 4-7 overall record.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first quarter off an early goal by Bucknell's Heather Smith, Wagner held the hosting Bison scoreless in the third quarter while knocking in three unanswered goals for the come from behind victory.   
Starting off down 6-2 midway through the second quarter, the Seahawks gained momentum offensively as the 4:08 mark saw the beginning of a seven goal run.  After senior Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) drew a 5-meter penalty, co-captain Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA / Wilson) capitalized on the opportunity to start the seven goal streak. 

As time clicked off the clock, Wagner hit back-to-back goals in the final seconds of the first half to put the Seahawks within one.  With 45 seconds remaining in the second quarter, junior goalkeeper Laura Karbach (Abington, PA / Germantown Academy) send a lob pass to co-captain Lauren French (Colmar, PA / North Penn) who placed the ball between the pipes. 

On the next possession, senior Molly Robinson (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) whipped a shot from half-pool which sailed past the Bucknell goalkeeper and into the net as the buzzer signaled the end of first half play.

After the break, Wagner's defense held the Bison scoreless throughout the third quarter as Robinson, Beck and French each sent one into the net to put the Seahawks up 8-6 headed into the final stanza.

Thirty seconds after play began, French knocked in her third goal of the game off an assist from Hannings.  With 4:38 left in the game, Bucknell answered back, netting two to end a 16-minute scoring drought.  With the 9-8 advantage in the final minutes of play, Wagner's defense remained tenacious as a last-second shot by Hallie Kennan was blocked by Karbach to preserve the Seahawk victory.

After leading throughout the majority of the first and second quarters, the momentum shifted in favor of the Bears as the Ivy League opponent took a 7-6 lead off a last second goal at the break.  Battling for the lead throughout the remainder of the game, the Seahawks were unable to overcome a two point deficit set in the third quarter as Brown captured the 12- 11 victory. 

Holding onto a 2-0 lead until the three minute mark of the first quarter, the Seahawks knocked in two more first period goals and allowed the Bears three to set the score at 4-3 heading into the second quarter.

After an early goal from Brown's Katharine Booher tied the game at 4-4 a minute and a half into second quarter play, Wagner's Michelle Greenough (Davis, CA / Davis) sent Robinson two back-to-back passes which each resulted in a goal to put the Green & White up by two.

Brown's offense took over at the 2:17 mark, sending three goals into the net to set the score at 7-6 in favor of the Bears at the break.

As the second half commenced, the volley for the lead continued as Brown's Madison Pepper scored two minutes into the third period to only have the deficit cut back to one with a man-up goal from Beck.
Brown managed to score two more times in the period as Beck kept the Seahawks within one with two more goals of her own.   

With the score set at 10-9 headed into the final stanza, Beck tied the game off an assist from Robinson with 6:30 remaining to play.  A minute later, Brown went back up by one with a Liz Rozen goal.  Tying the game for the fourth time, Beck sent her seventh goal of the game past the Brown goalkeeper to set the score at 11-11 with 2:26 on the clock.

In an attempt to force the game into overtime, the Wagner defense tightened but couldn't hold off a wicked shot from Brown's Kate Woods at the 1:35 mark. 

The Bears held the Seahawks within one for the remainder of play and captured the 12-11 win.

Wagner is back in action on February 25th at the Princeton Crossover when they face off against Harvard at 11:30 AM and their second match up of the season with the hosting Tigers at 7:45 PM.  On February 26th, the Seahawks battle George Washington at 10:15 AM and take on the Bison of Bucknell in a rematch at 3:15 PM.
