Santa Clara, CA - Santa Clara scored the first eight points of the game and never looked back en route to collecting a 69-45 win over Wagner in the championship game of the 46th annual Cable Car Classic at the Leavey Center. The Broncos improved to 11-2 on the year while the Seahawks fall to 5-5.
Senior
Jonathon Williams (Richmond, CA / Kennedy / City College of San Francisco) was named to the All-Tournament Team for the second-straight year after recording a team-best seven rebounds in tonight's game.
Wagner will now close out the non-conference portion of its schedule at the Spiro Sports Center against Penn on Saturday, December 29 at 4:00 pm.
Sophomore
Marcus Burton (Charlotte, NC / David W. Butler) paced the Seahawks in scoring for the first time in his young career with 10 points, on 4-of-6 shooting, with a pair of three pointers and a pair of assists. Narrowly missing double-figures was junior
Kenneth Ortiz (Newark, NJ / Science Park / Southern Mississippi), who finished with nine points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals over a team-best 34 minutes.
In the first half, the Broncos jumped out to an early 10-2 lead thanks to forcing the Green & White into misfiring on nine of its first 10 shots in the game's first seven minutes. Santa Clara extended its lead out to a half-high 19 at 33-14 following a Brandon Clark layup with less than a minute until halftime. Ortiz then hit a runner and Burton his second triple of the first half as time expired to trim the deficit at halftime to 33-19.
Marc Trasolini led the Broncos offensively in the opening stanza with 14 points while Evan Roquemore added nine points and three assists.
Santa Clara opened the second half with a pair of buckets only to see Wagner continue to fight and cut the deficit to 43-28 following an Ortiz free throw with 12:42 to play. Unfortunately, the Broncos responded with a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 52-30 at the 8:29 mark of the second half en route to posting a 69-45 victory.
Trasolini scored a game-high 23 points en route to winning Tournament MVP honors while Roquemore joined him on the All-Tournament Team after finishing with 16 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Brandon Clark rounded out the double-figure scorers with 13 points.
For the game, Wagner shot just 30.0 percent (15-for-50) while Santa Clara finished up at 41.5 percent (22-for-53). The Seahawks also lost the battle of the boards for just the second time this year by a 38-33 margin.
