Staten Island, NY – Three Seahawks found the back of the net in the first half, and the Wagner defense held off a late-game barrage, as the Green & White defeated Mount St. Mary's, 3-2, on Senior Day at Hameline Field.
The first goal of the day came from a senior off an assist from a fellow classmate. In the 13th minute,
Katie Keown (Morris Plains, NJ/ Morristown) sent a powerful throw into the box, where it was headed in by
Monica Zurich (Montvale, NJ/ Pascack Valley) for the game's first goal.
In the 31st minute, another senior got in on the action, as
Julie Vigliotti (Staten Island, NY/ Notre Dame Academy) blasted a shot past Mountaineer goalkeeper Rachel Bourne for a 2-0 advantage.
Just before the half, the Seahawks added to the lead, this time off the foot of a freshman.
Siara Kolpon (Wayne, NJ/ Wayne Hills) recorded her first collegiate goal, scoring off a free kick from 25 yards out, putting Wagner up 3-0.
Mount would not go quietly, however. In the 47th minute, Kelly Baker found Ragan Cote, who shot the ball into the lower right corner of the net, cutting the lead to 3-1. Baker picked up another assist in the 63rd minute, as she sent a free kick into the box, which was put home by Andrea Bujacich, making the score 3-2.
The final few minutes of play featured a frantic pace, with Seahawk sophomore goalkeeper
Maureen Vetter (Brookfield, CT/ Brookfield) and the defense in front of her able to hold off the Mountaineers until the final horn. Vetter finished the game with six saves. Bourne made nine stops for Mount St. Mary's.
Wagner concludes the season with a trip to the Keystone State next weekend. The Seahawks play at Saint Francis (PA) on Friday at noon, followed by a contest at Robert Morris Sunday at noon.
