Teaneck, NJ - Wagner dominated Fairleigh Dickinson in almost every facet of the game en route to an 88-64 victory in Northeast Conference (NEC) action at the Stratis Arena. With their fourth-straight road victory, the Seahawks improve to 11-3 and 2-1 in the NEC while the Knights fall to 1-12 and 0-3 in the league.
Junior
Jonathon Williams (Richmond, CA / Kennedy / CC of San Francisco) led four double-digit scorers with 23 points and connected on 11-of-14 from the line to go along with six rebounds over 29 minutes.
Wagner will have little time to rest as the Seahawks head to Monmouth on Saturday, January 7, for a Noon tip-off, in a game that will be televised live on MSG+. The game will not streamed online as those without MSG+ can only watch with DirecTV (Channel 635).
Sophomore
Latif Rivers (Elizabeth, NJ / Avon Old Farms (CT)) wasted little time in starting the game's scoring, draining a three pointer just three seconds into the game before senior
Tyler Murray (Toronto, Ontario / Eastern Commerce) followed with a triple of his own that staked the Green & White to an early 6-0 lead.
Following a timeout, FDU regrouped with eight-straight points en route to building its largest lead of the game at 10-7 with 15:22 remaining in the first half. Wagner immediately responded with a 12-0 run that took just just over two minutes to accrue. Williams drilled the first of his team-best 23 with a jumper before Rivers converted a fastbreak layup to reclaim the lead for the Seahawks at 11-10. Sophomore
Naofall Folahan (Cotonou, Republic of Benin / Wilbraham and Monson Academy (MA)), the NEC's leading shot blocker, then rejected a shot before dunking it home on the other end. Senior
Chris Martin (Sicklerville, NJ / Apex Academies) closed out the game-changing spurt with a pair of three pointers, giving the Green & White an insurmountable 19-10 lead with 12:43 until halftime.
Later in the first with the lead at eight, Wagner ripped off nine-straight points, fueling an 18-5 run that extended the lead out to a half-high 21 at 45-24 with 3:48 to go until halftime. Williams scored nine of the 18 points, on a three pointer and six free throws, but it was freshman
Mario Moody (East Orange, NJ / East Orange Campus) that provided the excitement with a putback layup before
slamming home this Martin pass while capping the Seahawks' 9-0 spurt.
The Knights would score the final four points of the half as the Green & White grabbed a 45-28 halftime lead thanks to +10 advantages in points off turnovers (10-0) and fastbreak points (12-2). Wagner connected on 92.9 percent (13-14) from the line and 42.9 percent (6-14) from beyond the arc while turning the ball over just three times en route to matching its largest halftime lead of the season (Delaware State). The relentless Seahawk defense limited FDU to just 34.8 percent (8-23) shooting from the floor and 11 turnovers. Rivers (12 points) and Williams (11 points) paced the offensive attack in the opening stanza wihle the Knights were kept in the contest by Louisville transfer George Toode, who had 16 of the team's 28 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor and a perfect 8-of-8 at the line.
FDU would make it interesting in the beginning of second half with a 9-3 run that cut the deficit to 11 at 48-37 with 18:11 to play, only to see Williams answer with a jumper. The Knights would continue to plug away before Wagner broke away with seven-straight points, leading to a 10-1 run that extended the lead out to 65-44 with 13:57 to play. FDU would cut it to 17 on two occasions but could get no closer as Wagner would win going away by the score of 88-64 while collecting its first 20-plus point win on the road since a 91-60 romp at Monmouth on February 28, 2009.
Rivers, the reigning NEC Co-Player of the Week, had another big night, scoring 19 points, on 7-of-11 shooting while mixing in a nice array drives, floaters and jumpers. Last game's hero, Ortiz, had another great all-around outing with 11 points with a game-high five assists while matching Williams with a team-best six rebounds. Rounding out the double-digit scorers was Murray, who reached double-figures for the 13th time this year and the 48th in his last 51 games, with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Despite being saddled by foul trouble, Folahan had three blocks in just 10 minutes for his eighth multi-block performance of the year.
Leading the way for FDU was Goode, who narrowly missed a double-double, with a game-high matching 23 points and a game-best nine rebounds while going 6-of-11 from the floor and 11-of-12 from the line. Melquan Bolding also added 13 points.
Wagner shot a blistering 56.7 percent (17-30) from the floor in the second half en route to 47.6 percent (30-63) for the game. The Seahawks also outscored the Knights 27-0 from beyond the arc, making good on 45.0 percent (9-20) while FDU misfired on all three attempts.
