South Hadley, MA – Behind two stellar rounds from sophomore
Ellen Huffman (Lima, OH / Lima Central Catholic), the Wagner women's golf team finished fourth at the Mount Holyoke Invitational this weekend, played at The Orchards (par 72 – 5,845 yards) in South Hadley, MA.
Huffman's opening round 79 put her in the top-five after day one, before she fired off a 73 - the lowest score of the day - in her second round. The second-years two-day score of 152 was just four strokes shy of the individual leader.
“Ellen is really in super form and she earned every part of her 3rd place finish,” said head coach
Christopher Fourman. “In fact, if it weren't for two triple bogies on day one she would have won the tournament. Once her putts start falling she is going to be a force in the conference.”
Freshman
Kathryn Jimerson (El Paso, TX / Coronado) also had a solid weekend, shooting 81-80, for the first top-ten finish of her young collegiate career.
Just a few shots back, upperclassmen,
Miko Page (Brooklyn, NY / Edward R. Murrow) and
Kaitlin Osmundsen(Staten Island, NY / Tottenville) posted rounds 82-85, and 88-89, to finish in 23
rd and 45
th, respectively. Sophomore
Laura Yasson (Stony Brook, NY / Ward Melville) rounded out the five-member team for the Seahawks, shooting 90-94.
“I am very proud of the way our girls hung tough this weekend,” Fourman said. “The Orchards is a test of nerve with tree lined fairways and elevated greens and the fact that the 2003 women's US Open was played there is testament to the difficulty of the course. We are striking the ball better than we were at this time last year and with 3 tournaments left to go I really like the position we are in.”
Wagner's team score of 657 put them 23 shots back from Williams College, who took the top honors at the 36
th annual invitational. Wagner will next compete in the ECAC Tournament in Egg Harbor, NJ, this weekend.
