Lewisburg, PA – The Wagner College women's golf team opened its 2011 fall season with a 10th place finish at the 54-hole, par 70, Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, PA.
The Seahawks were led by junior Miko Page (Brooklyn, NY / Edward R. Murrow) who put two opening rounds of 76 and 75, before shooting an 80 in her final round to finish tied for 20th place in the 80-golfer event.
Four strokes back from Page was sophomore Ellen Huffman (Lima, OH / Lima Central Catholic) who started off slow with an opening round of 84, before firing a 76 and a 75 of her own to finish in a tie for 29th place.
Freshman Kathryn Jimerson (El Paso, TX / Coronado) opened up her collegiate career with a stellar opening round of 79 – just three strokes back from Page's team-leading 76. Jimerson wrapped up the final two rounds with two 83's for a three-round score of 245 and 44th place finish.
Senior Kaitlin Osmundsen (Staten Island, NY / Tottenville) and sophomore Laura Yasson (Stony Brook, NY / Ward Melville) rounded out the five-member travel team, shooting a 270 (89-92-89) and a 279 (86-93-100), respectively.
"Coming out of Bucknell there are a lot of positives we can build on going forward into the rest of the season," said head coach Christopher Fourman. "First, we shot five rounds in the 70's as a team. Secondly, we are still very young with two sophomores and a freshman, so to show this kind of play at the beginning of the season when most people are just working on getting their bearings and trying to find a groove says to me that we are in for a successful campaign."
Host school, Bucknell, took the team title with a 906, edging past Rutgers by one stroke. Wagner's final team score of 978 placed them in 10th at the end of the tournament, finishing ahead of Saint Francis (PA) and Saint Francis (NY) from the Northeast Conference.
The Seahawks will participate next in the Mount Holyoke Invitational the weekend of September 24, in Hadley, MA.
