Men's Tennis Opens Up Season At Stony Brook Invitational

The Wagner men's tennis team opened up the 2011-2012 season with a solid performance of the first day of the Stony Brook Invitational at University Courts. The Seahawks will conclude play at the tournament tomorrow.

The Seahawks collected a pair of singles wins and a doubles victory.

Freshman Matthew Richards (Bayport, NY / Bayport-Blue Point) opened his collegiate single's career with a victory in the opening round of "C" pool play, defeating Daniel Szwarc of Stevens Tech in straight sets, 7-6 (1), 6-3 before falling in his subsequent match.

Vying to join Richards as a victor in the "C" bracket was junior Christian Rautenstrauch (Charlotte, NC / Providence Day, before ultimately losing a three-set heartbreaker by scores of 5-7, 7-5 and 10-8.

After dropping his first singles match of the year, sophomore Danil Ovechkin (Staten Island, NY / Pendleton School (FL)) rebounded with an easy 8-4 victory over the 2011 Skyline Conference Player of the Year, St. Joseph's College (Long Island) Erik Forsyth, in the "A" bracket consolations.

After receiving a bye in the opening round of doubles action, the duo of Richards and junior Taylor Santoro (Absecon, NJ / St. Augustine Prep) defeated the tandem of Brian Heinlein and Ken Kadar from St. Joseph's with relative ease, 8-1 in the "C" bracket.

The Green & White will conclude play at the tournament tomorrow.
