Poughkeepsie, NY – Coming off of a tough 10-9 loss to Marist earlier in the day, Wagner's water polo team improved to 1-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) after beating the Villanova Wildcats 17-5 in the second conference match of the weekend.
The Seahawks established a comfortable lead early in the game as they blanked the Wildcats 6-0 in the opening quarter. Wagner outscored Villanova 6-2 in the second quarter in building a 12-2 halftime bulge. The Seahawks found the net five more times in the second half as Villanova scored three to give Wagner the 17-5 win.
Ten Seahawks scored in the conference win as
Lauren French (Colmar, PA / North Penn) led the team with five goals, two steals and one assist. The junior stands at second on the team in goals with 39 on the season and seventh in all-time scoring with a career total of 124.
Carina Giles (Mohton, PA / Governor Mifflin),
Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA / Souderton Area) and
Sidney Hoshko (Coronado, CA / Coronado) added two goals apiece. Giles also accumulated three assists and two steals as Pyrz added two assists of her own to put the senior a mere 14 assists away from breaking the Wagner all-time assist record of 113.
Freshman
Stacy McGregor (Sinking Spring, PA / Wilson) and sophomore
Tatum Colitz (Wyomissing, PA / Wilson) each recorded their first career goals while sophomore
Katie Jordan (Westlake Village, CA / Agoura) hit her first goal of the season off of a penalty shot.
Also scoring for the Seahawks were
Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA / Governor Mifflin),
Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA / Wilson) and
Molly Robinson (Lansdale, PA / North Penn, who each contributed one goal in the win.
Wagner returns to conference play tomorrow, April 10, as the Seahawks take on Siena at 9:00 AM and St. Francis (NY) at 4:30 PM.
